Arjen Anthony Lucassen, best known for his work with Ayreon, takes the heaviest elements of music and mixes them with his love for science fiction. The result is "Star One - Space Metal". A journey through the mind of Lucassen's best kept memories of science fiction movies. Kind of a new idea in terms of writing a concept album but the theme works! It all starts off with "Lift-Off", sounding like the theme from Dr.Who meets Dream Theater but it's much more than just that! The music becomes full blown with "Set Your Controls" followed by the thick chorus of "High Moon". With so many textures and levels of sound Star One is made up of quite a few more people than just your average 4 or 5 man band. For starters Floor Jansen (After Forever) is brought in to sing the high end on songs like "Songs Of The Ocean" along with Sir Russell Allen (Symphony X), Damian Wilson (ex-Threshold), Dan Swano (ex-Edge Of Sanity, Nightingale), Robert Soeterboek (Ayreon), and Dave Brock (Hawkwind)...and that's just the vocal appearances! Instrumentalists Ed Warby, Jens Johansson (Yngwie, Dio, Stratovarious), Erik Norlander and Gary Wehrkamp (Shadow Gallery) round out one impressive set of musicians! The large synth leads can be clearly found on "Master Of Darkness". "The Eye Of Ra" with it's vocal swapping and heavy deliberate foundation, it will soothe that need for something slow and powerful. A high end screaming vocal isn't always needed to get your point across. Sometimes a deep dark and erie style works just as well as on "Sandrider" and "Perfect Survivor". Of course, they're mixed with some higher end but the mix is just right! If it sounds like a war cry then you are listening to "Intergalactic Space Crusaders"....kind of reminds you of Star Wars doesn't it? No? Pick up this album and find out! The journey comes to an end with "Starchild". A 9+ minute epic roller coaster really puts a sense of closure to the album....or does it? You decide! If you could picture Dream Theater crossed with Ayreon (naturally of course),and add in a twist of Swedish power metal then you have Star One! For all the latest, be sure to check out Star One at Inside Out Music America's official website at http://www.insideoutmusic.com!
