Just learned to scream (Corey Taylor-ish)

Hey guys what's up?

I've been trying to scream for fucking years without damaging my clean voice etc and I THINK I've just found a way of doing it :D

Would be REALLY sick if you could take a quick listen and let me know what you think.

Personally I think it's a blend between Old school Corey Taylor, Jens Kidman and a touch of Alexi Laiho in there.... let me know what you guys think!

Go easy :D

**UPDATED WITH NEW CLEAN VOCALS** (28/06/13)

Lyrics:

The shapes conclude a broken phase,
A point in time that never existed,
I count the cuts in the sky,
And wait for it all to tear,

Wide open,
The road to future gain has come a day too soon,
Were the men you paid to kill not stronger than the earth?
Such a shame to leave, all that you have bought,

It's only life, can't you live it for once?
For once, is all we have,
The people you have bought might share your grave,
But the pain will last forever,

The last parade,
The end of men,

Sounds good but I can hear that weird raspy-ness ... not sure how to explain it. I noticed it a lot with our old vocalist while he recorded in the same room with me with headphones on and I could hear his innards working. Almost sounds like you're hurting yourself a bit with the held-out screams.

Ahh, perhaps it's just because I'm new to the technique? I'm fairly certain it's a similar technique to Jens Kidman / Corey Taylor BUT obviously we are different people AND they have had that shit down for longer than 2 days hahaha :D

All I can say is that is doesn't hurt at all and leaves my clean vocals untouched which is fantastic, BUT I agree I'm not happy with the tone of it yet. Will take a while to refine it I'm sure! Thanks for the feedback :D

Reminds me of Matt Heafy alot, can slightly hear a strained clean voice behind the screams if that makes sense

I can hear the similarity in style for sure!

Your main vocal sounds like Dave Mustaine

Ha! That's a new one, I've been compared to Chris Cornell, Sebastian Bach and Devin Townsend before... but never Dave Mustaine.

Should I take that as I can't sing? Hahaha :D

I just want to be able to add as many tools to my bag as possible. I want to be a session vocalist etc.. so the more I can do the more valuable my services :D
Ok, I get it
I think you need more pressure for scream. It hurts a little clean tone within the live performance but in record sessions when you can take a break between takes, there is nothing to scary :kickass:

Ive been doing metal vocals for like 14 years, so I figure id toss in my 2 cents ;) There are a few differant techniques to metal vocals. There is obviously more than just this but if you find all these "places" it opens up alot of flexibility in what you can do, for the sake of labeling ill refer to the main ones as "Throat screaming" "Gutteral" "Falsetto" and "Screaming".. From the audio I beleive that you are throat singing (Lamb of God is a example of a "throat screamer"). Which involves clenching your vocal chords and finding that "sweet spot" or "balance" in air output so you get the rasp. It can be wearing on your voice tho as it is basicly putting your vocal chords into whisper position and barking rasp thru them so make sure to find the proper "balance" so you get the sound u want but dont lose ur voice after an hour heheh also with throat singing try to imagine a imaginary line right across where your moustache would be, and try to keep your voice "Over" that line. There is gutteral stuff (Job for a cowboy, whitechapel is a example), Which doesnt have to be low, but generally is. But for that you want to kind of imagine you were making fun of a retarded person "DURRRR" that openness in your throat, Its feels like its more "open"... A good way to see if your doing it correctly is to do a "OOOOOOOOOOH" and plug your nose. If the sound doesnt change at all then your doing it right... and if you practice on it youll notice that each vowel sound has a very unique sound to it in gutteral expecially E "REEEEEEET"... Next is falsetto (Black Dahlia Murder is an example). Where you will be entering the falsetto range of your voice and then pushing it into a screech... A good way of finding your falsetto voice is "Back in Black" or pretty much any acdc song as he was also a falsetto singer.. This technique is also something to keep "Above the Line" in mind during as it should really also feel kinda like its coming out of your nose.... Some people just cannot do falsetto.. Thats a thing. Last is just regular "screaming" (Despised icon during non-gutteral parts is an example, also hatebreed) in which u just fucking scream hard and hurt your voice... Always an option but not recommended... But practice with all these differant "feelings" and you will not only have better control of your voice overall but youll have a whole arsenal of cool sounds... Also any note that you hold will always be a vowel. So focus on your vowel sounds and if you are ever preparing to play live I recommend doing jumping jacks while screaming A-E-I-O-U daily for a little bit longer than it takes you to get tired... Youd be suprised what it does for your stamina live.... Always remember, There is no "right or wrong" expecially in metal vocals, just always focus on expressing yourself and doing what sounds good to you and inspires passion in you. Others will hear and relate to that more than any fancy tape saturation or vocal exercise/techniques anyday...

tl;dr

Awesome post. Will show to my buddy.

Thanks for the info man! Fantastic response that will help many here I'm sure!

with regards to mine, my friend "ooidort" on these forums can do the Randy Blythe style of vocals which include using false chords an example of this is here:

www.karhu.bandcamp.com

Whereas the style I do sounds a lot different to me personally. It doesn't sound like it's hitting the same part of my vocal chords as his /Randy's do (at least to me).

I don't whisper and build from that. I simply sing a note and then gently move the top of my throat / tighten it and a scream just happens. It's really effortless to do, it just doesn't sound angry enough for me hahaha :D

Even when I push to get my "rock" style vocals it's still a completely different place.

So I think I need to keep practicing to really get the tone I'm after, but thank you so much for the info man! Have a great day!!

Sounds good already for a first try man ! I hear what people say, it's just a matter of training and experience from there I think, since it seems you already know more or less how to sing ! Sounds like you need to find the correct and effortless technique that will let more air pass, or at least an easier way, fuller, and it will sound good !

Also if you can get your hands on it try putting your fx chain as gate > comp > eq > comp > Waves kramer tape... Light settings on gate just to remove any background noise from getting compressed > And then really smash it down with the first comp, get your presence and pass mud/hiss with eq, smash a bit less than first with comp but still get it right up front, then get ur saturation with tape.. Its a great unit and gives that bite without getting to "Manson-ey"... Also to get the SATURATEED high screech sound (Suicide silence, Emmure.. "WHAAAAAAA!") just record the same track and pan 100% left/right with 2 tracks and 70/70ish with another 2 all to the same bus... Very similar to guitar quad tracking.. Sounds amazing with good highs if you can perform 4x very similarly...

Honestly your technique sounds fine, Just find YOUR voice and scream it proud. I wish I sounded that good when I started to scream.. Your a natural

Wow.

Thank you man. *hugs*

I also hear a similar sound to Matt from trivium. I think he is awesome at vox. The vocalist in my band is probably my favorite screamer at the moment but I also like the vocals in a local band in my area called pretending we're monsters. The cleans and screams are good.
