Lucifer Rising is Swedish Death Metal act Kaamos' second full-length album, following their s/t debut from 2002. As you would expect from a band of their origin, Kaamos delivers the goods with a crushingly heavy guitar tone, packing the album with grinding riffs and furious leads. This is brutal death metal in the vein of Dismember, set to conquer all with its intense, powerful battery.

Not only does this band pack a deadly punch with its full speed mayhem, but they have a knack for breaking it down into a vicious groove, a key ingredient to a great death metal album. Opener "Black Revelation" is an excellent example of this formula and gets the listener acquainted with what is to come throughout this release. "Gnosticon" is similar to the opener and another solid piece, but a real highlight follows in "Inaugurating Evil," which shows the band reaching their full potential at all speeds. Vocalist/bassist Karl belches forth lyrics of darkness as guitarists Konstantin and Nicklas weave together a solid foundation. The drum work of Chris is the perfect compliment, seemingly always in place as he lays waste to his drum kit. He also shows an ability to play well at a slower tempo, not something all extreme metal drummers can do. The title track is another vicious slab of carnage and while it is one of the most brutal songs on the alum, it is also one of the most catchy and memorable. "Mysterious Reversion" is similar to what you'd get if you melded "Inaugurating Evil" and "Lucifer Rising" into one piece. It is another of the album's best songs and has a powerful outro. "Chthonic" is an all out aural assault while "Ascent" is a brooding closer that ends the album on a mysterious note, leaving the listener wanting more.

This is yet another solid release on Candlelight Records, who are churning them out as if it's nothing recently, and it's also another entry into the list of 2005 albums to keep an eye on. Kaamos' Lucifer Rising has risen to vie with Yyrkoon's Occult Medicine as one of this year's top death metal entries. They'll also be touring later this year with Marduk, so if that show comes your way, you may want to look into it. A solid slab of vile death, recommended.

A crusher! Best of the old school Swedish death type bands I've heard recently...beating out even some of the old masters themselves. Highly recommended to anybody into Grave, Vomitory, Dismember..
