Ikuinen Kaamos - So Rose The Dreadful Ghost
Self Released – Demo – 2003
By Russell Garwood

Finnish duet Ikuinen Kaamos play mid-tempo black metal, with a strong dose of melody and occasional time changes. Slower sections with wailing, epic and endless guitar lines show a melancholic edge, while the production (the demo was recorded at a local youth centre) adds a true/grim edge. For such atmospherically-biased black metal there is a notable lack of keyboards, and occasional faster sections add aggression to the otherwise less extreme sound. Vocalist Jarno Ruuskanen also plays the guitar and bass on this, the band’s third release; his growls are unforgiving, but show relatively little variation, while the bass is solid. The guitars are good, with lots of variation and nice tunes, and the drums - courtesy of Kari Hyvärinen – are straight-forward but powerful, ringing of Scandinavian drum work from the early nineties.

"So Rose The Dreadful Ghost" is a substantial demo, the three songs adding up to a total running time of nearly 24 minutes. It is to the band’s credit that the slightly repetitive songs nevertheless hold your interest throughout, and with a little development Ikuinen Kaamos have a very bright future. Their music is well written and effective, if not wholly original.
