The shrouded dawn of Kampfar began fifteen years ago in their native hometown of Fredrikstad, Norway and was originally a musical collaboration between lead singer Dolk and guitarist Thomas which focussed on the experimental blending of folk music and traditional black metal, later incorporating classical influences.

Although the duo had significant success with this project, it was put on hold for various reasons until 2003, which saw the incorporation of a drummer and bass guitarist and the writing and release of new material.
Over time, the albums themselves have become lyrically darker and much heavier. Heimgang focuses specifically on the crossing over into the underworld, using influences from Norse folklore, myths and legends.

The album itself is impressive, containing strong and powerful riffs, some of which have a melancholic and quite emotional feel to them, for example, on the track ‘Vettekult’. Others have a far more upbeat feel and have musical resonances with bands such as Turisas and Korpiklaani, although with a heavier, darker and more brooding influence. If you are a fan of groups like Darkthrone and Satyricon, then it is likely that you will enjoy this album.
