Kansas frontman Ronnie Platt, who replaced Steve Walsh in the band in 2014, has revealed that he has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer, forcing the band to cancel a couple of live dates, and reschedule a couple more.
On February 15, Ronnie shared the following message: “For all of you asking, Tuesday I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer but before everyone gets all excited, it has a 99% survival rate, it has not spread. It’s contained to my thyroid. I just have to have my thyroid removed. Go through some rehab time and be right back in the saddle.
“I sincerely appreciate everyone’s positive thoughts and prayers. I have some absolutely amazing people going to bat for me!! as it has been put to me, this is just a bump in the road and will be behind me very soon! so everyone please CARRY ON!”
An updated statement from Ronnie regarding his thyroid cancer diagnosis was released yesterday (February 20):
“I met with my doctor today and found out I have surgery scheduled for March 4. So far, the prognosis has been very good. I’m looking forward to getting this behind me and being back in the saddle as soon as possible. I appreciate the outpouring of support I’ve been receiving. Thank you.”
As a result of Platt’s current situation, Kansas made the decision to cancel two Louisiana concerts in New Orleans on February 21 and Lake Charles on March 1. Tickets will be refunded at point of purchase. They also rescheduled two earlier dates in Oklahoma to November. “Our goal is to be back on the road as soon as possible,” assistant band manager J.R. Rees told Ultimate Classic Rock. “Right now, we’re all focused on supporting Ronnie through this.”
The next Kansas live date is currently scheduled for March 15 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Find the band’s tour itinerary here.
