Katatonia

Where does one start with these guys?

I started with Viva Emptiness, then got The Great Cold Distance, then I got everything else. I should be receiving Tonight's Decision later this week, so I will let you know how that one is.

Most people here will tell you to start with the first two albums and work your way forward, but start with TGCD and work backward.

Definitely one of my all-time favorite bands

The Great Cold Distance
Last Fair Deal Gone Down
Brave Murder Day

I would get Brave Murder Day and Discouraged Ones, then work your way either forwards or backwards depending on which you like best. Forwards goes into increasingly polished/produced sounding melancholic rock music (with Jonas' clean vocals), backwards goes towards death/doom. Some people seem to dislike one of those two eras. I personally enjoy everything they've released to some degree (the only ones I never really got into all that much are Tonight's Decision and Viva Emptiness).

Oh yeah, and might as well list my favourites.

Old era Katatonia: Brave Murder Day
New era Katatonia: Last Fair Deal Gone Down

I'll be honest I haven't given it too many listens since it was released so I definitely need to revisit it sometime. I remember it definitely had some great songs onthere but also some that seemed kind of sub-standard (especially lyrically).

Nothing they've done will ever compare to Dance of December Souls and Brave Murder Day. I'd say start with Brave Murder Day, especially since your an Opeth fan because Mikael does vocals for the alum.

Jhva Elohim Meth is very good. Sounds necro as fuck. I like Dance of December Souls more though.

Start with Brave Murder Day. Don't listen to those who say you should start with The Great Cold Distance, or do you like HIM and Kent as apposed to metal? I think the newer era is very good too myself but it was DoDS and BMD that got me hooked. Last Fair Deal Gone Down or what was the newest album when I first discovered them sounded pretty gay to me when I started. :)

Viva Emptiness and Brave Murder Day are best choices to start with. these are also my favkg Dance Of December Souls and Last Fair Deal Gone Down are a bit overrated by the fans...

I agree on LFDGD by far their worst album, never understood why everyone holds it so high.

EDIT: And BMD is a contender to the best album in the world all categories.

I like all of their albums. I got a song from Dance Of December Souls that was labeled as being a song by My Dying Bride years ago and at the same time acquired some of their newer stuff. I thought it was two different bands for ages. >_>

Not meaning to hijack, but what would you guys say are their top 5 songs?

I have The Great Cold Distance, which I really liked the first time or two through, but all the songs are kinda boring now. But I'd like to know a few of their best songs, because I don't want to get their full discography and I am using emusic so I can download individual songs.

1. Brave
2. Rainroom
3. Endtime
4. Velvet Thorns (Of Drynwhyl)
5. Last Resort

Maybe, It is hard to say, alot of newer songs are great aswell like Had to (Leave), Code Against the Code, Ghost of the Sun, In Death, A Song, etc. Really, most their stuff is good.
