Keelhaul Subject to Change Without Notice
Hydra Head Records HH666-76 2003
By Nathan Pearce
Keelhaul has been around for a little while, but, for some strange reason, I have just now heard them for the first time. Hailing on the Hydra Head label, I knew they would at least be worth the money I blindly spent. Luckily Keelhaul blew me away.
Imagine Dillinger Escape Plan, Isis, and your favorite moments in thrash metal all rolled into one. Youre probably getting close to the metal machine that is Keelhaul. Vocals are sparsely used and the riffs are crushing at times (similar to Isis), occasionally the band mixes things up both rhythmically and stylistically (similar to Dillinger Escape Plan), and sporadically Keelhaul likes to throw in some great thrashing riffs. While the combination might seem a little chaotic, rest assured Keelhaul knows exactly what they are doing. Each and every song is expertly played and crafted, and the entire album flies by leaving the listener wishing for more.
Hopefully Keelhaul can get some of the credit they deserve. I know Ive become a huge fan. While the music is a little hard to define, I think anybody interested in heavy, rhythmically dense music will really enjoy Subject to Change Without Notice.
