Killswitch Cover

I posted an old mix of this a while back, decided to remix it, been doing bits and pieces of it when I have had the time. Decided to mix it with the Sonalksis compressor on the mix buss. Any opinions of the mix would be cool, I think its quite an improvement from the version I last posted. Would have dug up the old thread, but I thought I'd just go ahead and start a new one in the right section. If anyone wants any details of the recording or mix, I'm willing to help.

Try this. Cut off everything below ~350hz and above ~3k, boost ~1.5k-2.5k, cut ~250. Boost/cut everything more than you usually do. Compress as hard as possible too. Gate pretty hard too. Sounds like you're singing through a megaphone.

I did this for a singer who really liked the live version of some STP song where I think he actually did sing through a megaphone??? It's a bonus track on a CD I think...

You might be able to not do everything so extreme and get closer to Howard but that should get you close.

Kick seems to have way to much energy. I imagine it would not translate on all system. Maybe you turned it to loud do to the lack of defention. Everything else sounds really good.

Hmm, I'm not sure where its coming from. When the kick is soloed I think it sounds great, and barely boomy at all. In the mix its occupying way too much. I think the bass guitar may have something to do with it, Ill try mucking about with that. The mix definitely suited the older speakers I was using, I have just tried it on other sets and the bass definitely stands out. There is something about the bass in this mix that I like, it just needs definition and more control. Anyway cheers for listening guys!

no worries my man.
t-willy, ha ha yeah i guess the english accent still comes thru, i quite like that tho, too many non american bands singing in american accents these days.
For all our talk about great mic's/ pre's / mic'ing methods etc, i did the vox for this just holding a sennheiser e835 which was plugged into my digi002. no pop shield or anything! just goes to show that with compression, eq etc u can get great sounding stuff with real basic setup.

Cheers dude, the snare is a mix between one on DFHS, not sure which one as I bounced it ages ago, and 2 other samples I have lying around. As far as EQ goes, I just EQ'd all the nasty rings out, boosted some highs and cut some mids. Think I used a Q10 for the surgical stuff, and the Sonalksis EQ for the more general EQ. I compressed it pretty heavily with the URS 1975 compressor too. Most of the sound that is similar to the KSE one is probably from the samples, one of which is a Sonor snare and the other is called MT Snare Ambient. I can upload them if you want.

....to know what Howard does to his vocals ...

actually its jesse leach who sang this one :)

the mix is pretty well done imho, but i figured that the bassdrum has to much energie in the low ends, not many but about 2-3 db less on a lowshelf would do it i guess, maybe 2db less volume too

i think i noticed that some drumparts are played not like in the original (as original i would consider the alive or just breathing version, the performance of yours is more like one selftitled cd, i like the alive or just breathing version more :) )
