Kiss Sonic Boom

Kind of weak. Surprised? Discuss.

Kind of weak? That's a fucking understatement...
Back to the 70's glory? In the tradition of Destoyer or Love Gun?! Bull"fucking"shit!!!! It's scab KISS in paint playing mediocre Asylum/Animalize songs...I like it about as much as Psycho Circus there are a couple keeprs on it. Overall not worth the wait. This record makes me like Anomaly even more...

Wow im actually surprised a couple of you actually like it. My thoughts on that cd is the way Mr Swine summed it up. Half Kiss material with the guys in makeup. It did sound like mid 80's to 90's kiss imho.

Listen, my expectations wouldn't have been so high if Gene and Paul hadn't opened their pie-hole and mentioned this album in the same sentences as some of the 70's classics. Revenge is still the best thing that they've released post 70's. I was curious about the re-recorded classics that's a good for a few listens. The DVD is poor quality but didn't really figure they'd go out of their way to put out a first class DVD. Foriegner's Can't Slow Down IS the better effort. Granted they are different bands, but who would have thought that a band with one founding member would produce a better effort than a Gene and Paul album?!

I pledged $20 to my station so I could get the new Kiss. Went to pick it up today and the music director said "I've got an extra copy of the new Ace Frehley, want that?" "HELL YES!"

I'll give the whole package a thorough listen this weekend and give my thoughts. I'll just say this, I loved Psycho Circus so there's a good chance I'll like the new album the whole way through.

1. "Modern Day Delilah" - Meh…
2. "Russian Roulette" - Sounds like an Asylum throwaway…
3. "Never Enough" - They ripped off the vibe of “Nothing But A Good Time.” It’s okay.
4. "Yes I Know (Nobody's Perfect)" - This great… this does sound like vintage KISS.
5. "Stand"- Sappy, fruity, weak…Did Paul pay tribute to Michael Jackson on this one?
6. "Hot and Cold" - Another great track, has a 70’s early 80’s KISS vibe.
7. "All For the Glory" - Good song, Eric sings, nothing remarkable.
8. "Danger Us” - Good opening riff…good chorus, good song.
9. "I'm an Animal"- Another great Thayer riff, this song however goes nowhere.
10. "When Lightning Strikes" - Not bad if you’re familiar with Black N Blue this sounds like it could have been a lost track. Tommy sings this one.
11. "Say Yeah!" - fucking abysmal…

Quoted for truth. That cd is not half bad.

I gave it a listen the other day. Meh. Actually, "meh" is giving this album too much credit. They came out retirement for this generic piece of garbage? And the re-done tracks add absolutely nothing, if anything, they take away from the originals like a bunch of bad covers. Sure, they'll rake in their millions which is why they do anything these days, but not without further tarnishing their already rusted legacy. I would recommend saving your money.

Bullshit. Nobody buys CDs anymore and this is retailing for about $12 for a 3 CD set - which costs more to produce than a single CD + Jewel Case. I dunno how you can talk about "tarnishing" a legacy when kiss has always been about 1 thing: selling shit. They revolutionized merchandising for bands. This isn't Pearl Jam here, it's fucking KISS. They don't hold a grudge against capitalism. You're bitching about this record like it's St. Anger or something.

They came out retirement for this generic piece of garbage?

They were in retirement?

As for the music, to each his own, I dig it. It's not as good as say, Creatures, Revenge or Destroyer, but it's not bad either.

Some of the re-records work, others don't. Forever sounded pretty bad. Deuce and Detroit Rock City were pretty good. But again, this is a BONUS CD. Meaning they obviously rushed it. If I want to hear Love Gun, I'll put on Alive 2 or the CD - the whole point of the re-records is a different interpretation. People are going to hate re-records no matter how good they are because the original song has a certain meaning to you. You expect it to sound a certain way.

sixx; i'm so pissed i bought this today instead of the foreigner which is still on my list but money not permitting. you're right this makes the ace album sound even better

lets see who else notices the song that rips off alice coopers poison chorus backing vocals

I've actually warmed up to a few tracks on Sonic Boom over the last few weeks. I don't think it's anywhere near what it was promised to be, but I really didn't have any 'lofty' expectations going in. I pretty much agree with sixx on his track by track breakdown, except I like #4 less, and #9 more. I also don't care too much for the songs that are not sung by Gene or Paul.

I've heard Cooper's Poison mentioned too, but I don't know or remember which song it is.

Also, I know I was on the fence early on, but my final answer is that Sonic Boom is a better album than Anamoly.

Bullshit. Nobody buys CDs anymore

Really? Then how come I bought both the EP and LP of Final Stage :saint:, and how come I have two albums on my way from Laser's Edge plus a one from Brazil and one from Hungary (eBay). And providing the Hungarian experience works I have 6 more to order? Not to mention I keep looking for the newer Kiko Loureiro, Metalforce, Jordan Rudess and I'm awaiting for Transatlantic, Heathen, Meliah Rage and Shadow Gallery this year?

I know a lot of people download legally (and a lot more illegally) and they don't buy the CD anymore. But to me MP3s are soulless, I follow a band as long as their music is available in CD format. I need to touch the case, to hold the CD, to read the booklet. Once that is taken away from me I'll not look forward for newer music, gonna comfortably sit in my living room and play my old CDs til they get worn or I'll die whatever comes first :headbang:

That's what happens when it's 10 years between albums and they've been touring for the last year. Plus it's Kiss - sort of like how when metallica releases a new album it'll go platinum (even if it's St Anger).

I wonder how many illegal downloads there are of the album... probably in the hundreds of thousands.
