Gene is also an underrated bassist I reckon, his basslines in that early era are awesome and totally drive the songs, moreso than the guitars I reckon! (In songs such as Strutter, Goin Blind, etc for example).

I've got to agree. Gene's playing in the 70's was much more adventurous than his later work.
