Konkhra Reality Check

By Russell Garwood
Reformed with the original lineup, Danish quartet Konkhra - code666s latest signing - differ greatly from the majority of the labels ever-growing, already varied roster. "Reality Check" comprises twelve tracks of unforgiving yet groove-laden death/thrash metal; precise riffage and technical soloing courtesy of Anders Lundemark and Kim Methiesons guitars fight equally proficient drums performed by Johnny Nielsen. Crushing beats frequently give way to solid fills and cymbal work, while taking numerous start/stop sections in their stride. These are augmented by the powerful bass of Lars Schmidt and Anders often layered, harsh growls, which intensify the onslaught. Occasional acoustics and cleaner guitar tones provide well needed contrast to the extremity in a few places, while the majority of the heavier work rushes by far more quickly.
This said, the grinding sound isnt overbearing - there is enough melody to maintain your interest, aided by sporadic time changes, and very clear production, which makes each instrument easy to differentiate. While not hugely original, Konkhrais music is a compelling mix of competent musicianship and accomplished song-writing, which will appeal to many fans of both thrash and death, as well as those craving some aggressive new metal.
