Thought that some of you old timers might be into this one. This cover was included on an EP I engineered late last year - just released by the band today. YouTube crushes it a fair bit, but you still get an idea. Let me know if you have any questions about the production process!

That mix sounds really fucking huge honestly! How much EQ carving/processing you did to the guitars (they sound more natural than your older mixes, is that just an EQ balance thing when dialing the tones or result of careful post-processing?), they aren't clouding any other mix elements at all, sound pretty wide and the clarity you can hear in the drum sounds because of that is really something.

The drum sounds are really great sounding, punchy and they sound pretty natural too, I quess you didn't use too much (if any) samples on this one?

Thanks mate!

I process much less on guitars these days. We tend to focus on getting things right at the source. We'll always record right into the amps, commit to the tone on the spot, no trial and error with reamping. Ironically, the guitars are the aspect of this mix I'm least pleased with. I let the band have a lot of input over the tone, and there are things I'd like to approach differently next time.

I think the more natural drum aesthetic started to rub off on me after spending time with Nolly. I have access to a fairly nice studio, and an awesome house kit, between that and Drum Leveler there's very little excuse to hinge on samples as heavily as we used to.

Misc. info on this mix: I used it as a test bed to try slightly different master bus processing to what I usually do. Instead of using the 4K G console, and 30att/Auto Rel, 4:1 ratio GSSL setting, I opted for 4K E, 10att/Auto Rel, 2:1. It sounds less stifled and the mix comes together quicker, but it loses a little something in terms of glue and immediacy, so I think I'll be going back to the usual set-up.

So are there samples mixed in with those drums? If so how much of the sample are we hearing? Any other thoughts on the drum leveler plugin would be welcome. My biggest problem with rock and metal drums still tends to be just the insane amount of bleed I get from drummers who smash the shit out of the hi hat and barely tap the snare.

I personally love the guitars. Mix is killer!

We only recorded hands, so the kick is 100% sampled (works for the genre). The snare is slightly augmented with a sample of itself, taken on the day, and also with a higher tuned version of the same snare (Bell Brass). Toms are all natural. They were actually really poor sounding toms, but some intense tuning work and Drum Leveler can work miracles. My recap for the drum session is that the cymbals were great, snare was awesome but needed to be tuned about a semitone higher, and we need to use the house kit toms.

You can reduce bleed by using Pro-MB on your drum tracks as an expander for your high frequencies. When the drum is hit the signal is full-range, but the moment the transient dips, the compressor sucks out the top-end.

I was actually thinking about doing just that recently. I have waves c4. I was thinking about just using a standard gate/ expander but it makes more sense just to expand the high frequencies only with a mb comp. I'll give it a shot.

Have you demoed or tried that drumatom leakage suppression plug??
Thanks Ermz.
