Laiho's new instructional DVD now available to pre-order...

So I got the second dvd and watched most of it. Yeah....Alexi can't play any of the solos and everything is super sloppy. XD

What solos does he play?

umm let me see, they give you a tab booklet to everything he plays though which is cool. Also sometimes it seems they found it neccasary to have a guy tell you what Alexi is trying to explain cause Alexi does it so bad XD.

solos:
Six-pounder
Are you Dead yet?
In your face
Living Dead beat
Next in line
Bodom beach terror

and this is V.2

Well I've watched most of the first dvd, and I gotta say, I'm pretty disappointed. But this due mainly to the choice of songs they've given. I really wish there were some songs off of Hatebreeder and FTR. Everything he demonstrates is from HCD and AYDY. and he really doesn't give any good tips or anything. However it does come with a little tab booklet, which is great. And they also offer the backing tracks on their site.

so yeah, this dvd kinda sucks. altho it's the only instructional dvd I own, compared to PG's Intense Rock and JP's Rock Discipline it's pretty bad.

Maybe a stupid question but for those who got the dvd's, do you think you will learn from them? I mean, we don't have all the same level but is there some things (even little) you learnt? or they are just good for tabs?

I just want some advice (I won't have them till next month) and it would be cool to know what you have learnt (as though i know a lot of you can play the guitar).

Where?

rockhousemethod.com
you have to have a member number in order to access it. it comes with the dvd.

I'd say it's mainly good for tabs. He does show you stuff like sweep picking and tapping, but it's nothing great. I mean you can easily learn that stuff on the internet itself. But if you are interested in playing some Bodom riffs from AYDY and HCD, then yeah, this dvd will help you.

.

I was coming here to post pretty much the same thing after watching the FIRST DVD. I only watched the second until today. I'm really disappointed in the song structure as well, Everything is mostly off of AYDY (my least favourite songs to learn by Bodom anyway) and a FEW off of HCRD. If Alexi would of came out with this in 2001 it would have been such gold!! The first DVD is nothing special in my opinion unless you're a VERY VERY beginner guitarist... haha which some people, even the people that think they're good could use some practice and reality checks on... The second DVD is good in ways for intermediate and somewhat advance guitar players who are looking to expand their leads and develop their skills. Some pretty good persistences in my opinion on the second DVD. So if I can recommend to anyone, just get the second DVD if you want to improve your overall technique. Everything in the first DVD you could learn overtime by just simply practicing, nothing challenging for any decent guitar player. My only other complaint is the constant annoying change between D and drop C. They should seperate them so if you are someone who wants to bother switching guitars doesn't have to. I just wish there were more sweet exercises or good examples that could really challenge players... Like the ending sweeping section in "The Nail." That would have been nice.

EDIT: Oh yes and as said above again... If you really want to learn some great techniques or you just want to shred or use things that you can actually use in your own technique or songs, BUY ALL of Paul Gilberts DVD's. A remarkable Teacher and a great person. They're such great DVD's. While it might not be the most EXOTIC playing style or something incredibly different, it will definitely help any up and coming guitarist or player looking to expand their technique a bit and get some speed. He's definitely a great video teacher.

yeah I forgot to mention the annoying interference of that drop C tuning thing...I mean we don't all have so much money to have different guitars lying around with different tunings on them so we can switch tunings whenever we want....in fact, I haven't even learned how to use my Edge pro bridge yet. I haven't once changed from standard tuning just cuz i'm kinda afraid of how to do it :erk: I know, I know. how lame is that.

^ is that a modified version you recently did? Cuz I have this file from you, which I got over a year ago, and I noticed the fingers are different at one section...
no big deal of course. i'm just wondering.

I think I got that "The Nail" tab before, or a similar in the tabs section, and thanks anyways, but I was just referring to it'd be cool to see ALEXI do these parts of songs and other cool and challenging riffs, rather than focus a lot of the dropped C riffs of AYDY and what not. In no way am I trying bad mouth him or anyone, and is probably doing what he and the company thinks is best, do whats newest and fresh. I would like to see alexi up close and personal pull of these looks and get a good look like you do, like for the Nail like I used as an example. The only time I've even heard him play it are some old live audio of the Wacken show when they played it...and this one rare youtube video of it as well. Oh well, I do thank Alexi for taking the time and skill to actually make an instructional DVD.

EDIT: oh yeah warheat, didn't you mention James Malone of Arsis doing some type of instructional DVD?? If so, whats going on with that. And I urge everyone that loves technical death metal, or just wants to be blown away, to go buy Arsis' new album "we are the nightmare." It's great.

If any of you honestly thought his DVD was going to be worth any sort of teaching value, you must not have ever seen any other videos of Alexi. It's not surprise he doesn't teach like Paul Gilbert, because Gilbert IS IN FACT a teacher. Alexi is just like any other guitarist who writes cool riffs, but doesn't necessarily explain them or his techniques (not that his technique is even that good anyway) very well. I got the DVD knowing that he would suck at teaching, but it's at least cool to have more videos of Alexi as a fan. Take it for what it's worth. I'm still glad I got the DVDs.
