i just wrapped the shootout a few mins. ago...i'll post the clips when i get home in a little bit

anyways, there were 4 mics involved - 2 that are considered ubiquitous "standards", and 2 somewhat cheaper "prosumer" mics. i'll reveal what mics were used in a couple of days.

signal chain:

steinway grand piano-->mic-->grace 801-->digi 192 converters-->PT HD

no eq/compression or anything was applied to the tracks. also, the grace has a stepped gain control, so the same amount of gain was applied across the board. i would still probably adjust the levels to be even when trying to judge them on their quality, but doing it this way also serves to give an idea of each mic's sensitivity.

damn...no love for the classical piano playing on here, huh?

anyways...if anyone cares...the mics involved(in alphabetical order) are an AKG C414 B-ULS, AT 4033, Neumann U87ai, and Rode NT-2A

Well, if I would ever record a Steinway, I wouldn't use any of them. Or I would use anyone of them, cause except from the different gain, I can't tell which one is high end vs. consumer. Maybe as an overhead on drums or on an acoustic guitar or something similar could be a different story...

good right hand playing, but left hand...I dunno, or is the piano out of tune?
I have a steinway at home too (thx dad ;-), but the best mics I got for it would prob. be my mxl 603 or ADK A-51...
uh, just checked out mp3 nr2 and nr4. nr2 sucks like hell. nr4 is pretty good.
:)

any shoddiness you hear is probably more in the playing than the piano...the instructor who oversees the studio keeps everything in immaculate shape, and would definitely have it tuned immediately if it was needed

the playing was done by a random student that my buddy scrounged up on campus...i was surprised that he played as well as he did, to be honest. he sat down, started playing, i hit record, and that was about it....i was a lot more interested in the sonics than the performance for this test.

and i would've liked to use drums or an acoustic guitar or something else in addition, but time was pretty limited, and the piano seems to work pretty well for mic comparisons since it's both far-reaching in its frequency range and complex in its harmonics and overtones.

well...for those who give a fuck, here's the mics:

#1 = Neumann U87ai
#2 = Rode NT-2A
#3 = AKG C414 B-ULS
#4 = Audio-Technica 4033a
