Swarm of quakes, led by a magnitude 6.0 temblor, shakes Central Coast

Most centered just outside 'quake capital' of Parkfield, no damage in SLO County

A strong earthquake with a preliminary 6.0 magnitude rattled the Central Coast at 10:15 a.m. today but authorities have received no reports of damage or injuries.

The temblor struck along the San Andreas Fault, centered 17 miles northeast of Paso Robles and nine miles south of Parkfield, dubbed the "Earthquake Capital of California," according to the U.S. Geological Service. More than 9,000 people from Los Angeles to Sacramento reported feeling the temblor, according to the Associated Press.

Some described the rolling quake as "feeling like we were riding in the back of a truck," rather than the sharp jolts of the San Simeon Quake, the Dec. 22 temblor that killed two people in Paso Robles and caused $239 million countywide.

The first temblor was followed by a magnitude 5.0 aftershock four minutes later, according to USGS data.

Among the several aftershocks within a half hour of the initial quake, four were above magnitude 4.0.

Three local hospitals have reported no quake-related injuries.

Hearst Castle spokesman Dan Eller said "it was a short rumbler," but the 388 visitors on the hilltop continued their tours, and there was no disruption in the schedule. Security staffs are on alert, just in case, he added.

Gigi Cohoon wasn't afraid of opening her Paso Robles hair salon - in an unreinforced masonry building next to City Park - "because it held up the first time." Her shop, Gigi's Hair Fantasia, was next door to the Harlow Building - which collapsed in the San Simeon Quake.

Sherri O'Leary was grabbing a drink with her daughter Kaitlin and friends Shari Castenholz and Nicola Perje at Rudolph's Coffee and Tea in downtown San Luis Obispo when the earthquake struck.

"I was getting dizzy in there," said O'Leary.

Although the friends didn't feel safe in the brick building, a new law requiring historic buildings to post signs warning the public it's not earthquake safe wouldn't have kept them from going in.

"It doesn't happen very often," O'Leary said.

"If it's your time, it's your time," Perje added. "You might as well go having a cup of tea."

The rattling didn't chip a single glass down the street at Le Fandango Bistro. Owner Michel Olaizola said there wasn't much anyone could do in case of a bigger one.

"What are you going to do, run?" he said. "We don't own the earth, the earth owns us."

Public works personnel in Pismo Beach and Grover Beach are continuing to check pumps, storm drain outfalls and other city facilities, they said.

Shandon resident Leonard Wittstrom said the quake disrupted his dining at a North County restaurant.

"It shook the hell out of people at the Jack Ranch Café," he said.

At about 10:50 a.m., Wittstrom said the schoolchildren in Shandon were just filing back into classrooms after having evacuated the buildings.

Workers at two wineries east of Paso Robles said there was no damage there, either. Although they felt the rolling quake and some bottles rattled against each other, they did not find any that had broken.

Shandon school district officials evacuated the one-room Parkfield Elementary School, sending children home at parents' requests. They have also heard from some parents who said glassware was broken in their homes by the quake.

Students in Shandon's elementary, middle and high schools have returned to classes after officials determined the buildings were safe.

Updates to this story will be posted throughout the day.

Haha, I thought this thread would be telling Erik to swim across the Baltic to Helsinki. What if sea monsters inhabit the Baltic too? :tickled:

No, but there is a ferry that sank 10 years ago to the day yesterday with 715 corpses still in it. That's more scary than a sea monster.
