Alright, one of my favourite bands! I'll go in reverse chronological order:
A Sun That Never Sets is the closest thing they've done to doom. It's really mellow in comparison to their earlier efforts. The songs are out of this world though, and once it grows on you, it never lets go.
Sovereign, as the name suggests, celebrates their liberation as they finally start their own record label, Neurot Recordings. It's a four track "mini-album" clocking in at over 33 min (longer than some band's albums anyway.) There is also some trippy multimedia visualization stuff on the disc. The music is a natural progression from
Times of Grace to
A Sun That Never Sets. The music is heavy, brooding, yet aural.
Times of Grace is my favourite album. It's also their heaviest album. It just does things to your brain that other music can't. Really too brilliant to describe in words. You'll have to hear it for yourself. They also released an album called
Grace under their alter-ego group, Tribes of Neurot. These two cds are designed to be played simultaneously on different stereos. Nothing short of mind-blowing.
Through Silver In Blood is probably their most popular release. It finds them really expanding on the tribal/spiritual aspects of the group, almost filtered through the realm of metal and industrial. Like every other album after it, it's original, groundbreaking, and utterly captivating.
Enemy of the Sun. While not as focused and consuming as their later releases, it's quality metal through and through. The final track, "Cleanse," is a fifteen minute tribal drumming onslaught that shouldn't be missed.
Souls At Zero has Neurosis still heavily relying on their hardcore roots. Again, this album was part of their development into what they are today.
The Word As Law. Relatively unfocused. More hardcore than anything. Similar to
Souls At Zero, which was released in the same year.
Pain of Mind was Neurosis' first release. Kinda raw "bay area" hardcore. I think they were still in their teens when they released this.
Anyone who likes Neurosis should check out ISIS.
Celestial is one of the most original, transcendental albums I've ever heard. Mandatory listening.
Cathedral rules!
Endtyme is supreme. These guys haven't made a bad album to this day. Still Say Solitude Aeturnus is the best doom band ever, though
Alchemist kick ass.
Organasm and
Spiritech smoke!
