I KNOW YOU DID THIS YOU RANDONAWESOME M'FUCKER!

GIMMEH DEETZ on the guitars and bass please bro. because it rules my ass off!

thank you so much for posting this thread, i had no idea they released a new album! and it is now playing on my itunes. great mix, though i feel like the mastering could be a little better. to me, it could sound a little bigger, but that is purely personal taste.

Agreed, that was the first thing i noticed its very mid range focused still sounds killer tho.

The guitar and bass tone really slay, any info on the bass?

I also love the part in Parasite when you hear the room when the double kick is going sooo tight. :D

nice album, really nice:) something fresh in there, and nice electronic samples here and there on breakdowns, good production:) i would like to hear something about bass chain, sounds great when appears solo

\m/

Thanks for the kind words guys :)

Let me try to answer some of this:

Guitars
Legend tunes to drop A and we used ESP Xtone guitars through a 6505+ on a Mesa angled 4x12 with a single sm57 into a Firestudio 26x26. No tube screamers, maximizer or anything else. Double tracked all rhythms.

Bass
ESP Surveyor 5 string DI through a Sansamp and Ampeg SVT... 4Pro? I can't remember exactly.

Drums
We wrote most of the songs in-studio, so we had the drummer play a bunch of sections and pieced them all together. I made a sample out of a Joey Jordison 13" snare that I used in combination with another sample I made from a Pork Pie 13x7 brass snare. Everything else is his Spaun custom kit - 22" kick, 10" rack 16" floor. Zildjian cymbals.

Mastering
I've heard a lot of people feel the mix/master feels a bit small when compared to other mixes - something I definitely expected and was done deliberately. I left more room for the instruments to breathe so that it really kicks and sounds more like a real, live band when you play it loud on a decent speaker system. So many metal bands are doing similar mixes with this style of music (everything maxed to the ceiling) that I wanted to make sure Legend's record had a unique, dynamic sound, even it meant that it might appear to have less punch when you cycle it in with other Rise mixes on your iPod.

Hope that answers the questions posted here. I'll be happy to answer any other questions. Glad to hear most of you guys are digging the record :Spin:

That's a ballsy move, regarding the master. The same has been done with my last couple of records (whether I liked it or not, hahah) and I think there can be some merit to leaving the dynamics and transients more intact on certain music.

I haven't heard the CD, but best of luck to you and the guys with it.

I don't think it's mixed/mastered CRAZY different than most records in the genre, but different enough to make it not sound like just another Rise band. If it were 100% up to me, I would have mastered it at half the current volume, haha, but.. you have to consider the commercial perception of it compared to other contemporary metal mixes. A band like this depends on sales and mild commercial success to support themselves on the road, so I have to make sure it's at least compatible. But like I said, if it were only for the art, it would literally be half the volume... and 10X as dynamic ;)

i fuckin love this shit! It´s definitely under the top 5 favorit hardcore productions up there with American Me- Heat or Bury your Dead- it´s nothing personal!
the Drumsamples are great! You should sell them :Spin:
Only thing i don´t dig as much are the vocals I like vocals really loud on hardcore sound.
But most of hardcore productions today seem to put the vocals somewhere between the vocals or guitars but not really on top of them!
love it anyway respect:hotjump:

Thanks guys!

Yeah, as far as the vocals go, it was another decision we made to put them in a spot that sounds more like a live hardcore/metal show - not quite so up front in the mix.

Another thing we did was using a hand-held microphone which also gives more of a live sound.

I know I've said in the past that I would never sell my drum samples, but if that means one less album with Slate samples on it, then I feel like I'm doing the music scene a service, haha :p

sell me that fucking snare right god damn now Josh!

and could i haz info on your 6505 settings for that particular record?

:p

hmm i noticed that from the studio diaries from the last album they did with Zuess they did the same thing, pretty neat idea. It looked like they used a Neumann handheld what mic did you use on The Pale Horse?
