Hey guys,

This is my first post here. I love the forum and I've been a lurker for a while now - sooo many great contributes here! I'd like to finally start participating :)

Anyhow, this is my latest attempt to get a fresh sound from a breakdown band. The thing that I tried to do right away, is throw any concept of melody out the window and go for a very live, raw, gross sound, haha. Remember the first time you heard a heavy band and you felt attracted and repulsed at the same time? That's the feeling I wanted with this recording, haha.

Please let me know what you think. Any tips and criticisms are welcome and appreciated.

Thanks!

I intentionally pushed back the vocals a bit to simulate being at a live show in the front row. Definitely lower than how I'll mix a metal band that has singing and whatnot. To me, music like this has the vocalist serve more of a percussive role, so a slightly lower mix on the vocals help push the heaviness of the instruments more. That's just my personal take on it for this specific band. The vocalist actually wanted it a bit quieter, so to each their own :)

Thanks, Josh! I dig your work man! I don't think I've heard a record as precise-sounding as the new Within The Ruins - ridiculous, haha :)

Yeah, whoever uploaded the new track to youtube did a good job keeping the 1080p enabled, but failed with the old album art :bah:

THIS IS FUCKING HOW VOCALS SHOULD BE SAT IN A MIX FOR ALL MUSIC LIKE THIS.

I started doing it years ago and dudes always complain but it sounds SO MUCH fucking better...

mind sharing what the vocal chain was and what kind of processing you used to get that uber-dirty saturtated sound?

this is indeed awesome....
