Lets share our meloncholic/somber/chill out music....!!!!

post modern industrial can be very chill-out too...tangerine dream/synergy was the founder of this genre...you have to have a somewhat avant garde backgound in jazz/new-age electronic music...but the rewards are very gratifying.....Synaesthesia /Delerium is very Trent Reznor Quake 3 Arena soundwise..in re to your type of chill out, I'd have to go with Zero 7 or Air which is modern chill out which is pretty cool too...there are some great OST too...like much of hans zimmers' work's , steve jablonsky, and mark snow of the x-files.....

definetly! Synaesthesia, Air and Zero 7 have all received numerous spins, great artists.

^^ Seconded.

Simon and Garfunkel, This Will Destroy You, Jesu, Pinback(though it gets boring to listen to more than a couple of their songs), Red Sparowes, Lanberk's debut etc.

Synaesthesia /Delerium is very Trent Reznor Quake 3 Arena soundwise..

Actually Synaesthesia and Delerium are both projects by Bill Leeb who is also the man behind Front Line Assembly (his "main" project) and about a million related and similar sounding electronic projects like Noise Unit, Conjure One, Pro-Tech and Intermix (also a nice chillout project). The reason why those things may sound similar to the Quake 3 Arena soundtrack is because that soundtrack was not made by Trent Reznor but was infact made by Bill Leeb. :)

Trent Reznor only did the sound for the original Quake.

Some of my picks that might not have been mentioned yet:

Air - Moon Safari
Biosphere - Substrata
Dead Can Dance - Within the Realm of the Dying Sun
Harold Budd & Brian Eno - The Pearl
Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygène
Klaus Schulze - Moondawn (and Tangerine Dream but someone already mentioned them)
O Yuki Conjugate - Sunchemical EP
Orbital - In Sides
Robert Rich & Steve Roach - Strata
Shpongle - Are You Shpongled?

That's mostly electronic stuff by the way.

I don't have a specific set of songs, however Dark Tranquillity, A perfect Circle, Linkin Park, HIM, Lacuna Coil, Oasis, plus a wide range of acoustic songs. Dark Tranquillity are one of my favourite bands, however I feel they provide a progressive upbeat which would represent sad turning to happy. My usual is Black Metal, which would mean I listen to a strange spectrum of music:lol:

Ozric Tentacles

check out their album "The Floor is Too Far Away", along with "Spirals in Hyperspace"

trippy spaced-out progressive awesomeness....listen to it with nice headphones, close your eyes, and it really makes you feel like you're flying through space at a million miles per second...

I usually listen to some Nightingale, Opeth when it comes to metal stuff

I listen to alot of classical music which is the best music to sleep or "chill out" to. Especially choral works and stuff

Also you should check out:
Eric Johnson - Venus Isle
Aria 2 - New Horizon
Arcana - Dark Age of Reason

This reminds me, I have ordered a cd on amazon called Angelica which has guitar players playing to classical arias. It even has Eric Johnson on it, performing the song "Ave Maria" accompanying an opera singer. It should be good

Ah...That explains it then. Very informative...The music in Q3Arena was perfect for the game...actually I ripped the mp3 loops out of the game and still give them a listen from time to time...but I've long since deleted the game. Good thread...getting some good suggestion that are worth checking out. Liking alot of stuff here too.

my favourite is a german doom/jazz band: bohren und der club of gore

their album geisterfaust is just amazing

Sunset Mission by Bohren & Der Club of Gore is way better!
Others I like to relax are:
Killimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, 35007, Pat Metheny, Keith Jarret, Esbjörn Svenson Trio, Norah Jones, Mogwai, RPWL, Tommy Emmanuel, Kammerflimmer Kollektief, etc.

If you are into Leeb's stuff you should definitely check out dEcodEr by Noise Unit and "Phaze Two" and the self-titled album by Intermix.

Projekt has had some pretty good artists. Most notably Love Spirals Downward (the album Flux is a great chillout record, check the song City Moon from their Myspace), Steve Roach, Lycia, O Yuki Conjugate and Black Tape for a Blue Girl.

Android Lust and Controlled Bleeding are also nice but I don't really consider that good chillout music (Android Lust is more reminiscent of NIN with a female vocalist and Controlled Bleeding is just more industrial in general atleast based on the few records I have heard).

porcuipine tree - fadeaway
porcupine tree - dark matter
bohren und der club of gore
tangerine dream
sigur ros
shora
godspeed you! etc
yndi halda
red sparowes, i guess post rock in general
any krautrock

as far as melancholic goes

blood on the tracks
five leaves left, pink moon
select radiohead tracks from Kid A and Ok computer
van morrison
porcupine tree has a good bit of melancholic tracks (heartattack in a layby)
