Liquid Tension Experiment

I think they kind of drag on for a while. I like LTE, but I do prefer DT with vocals. . .

YES, I LIKE JAMES LABRIE!! IS THA SO WRONG?!?!?!?! :waah:

I like the planned songs on LTE cds...the improv jams are not so hot IMHO. Just senseless noodling...particularly by JP. I guess it shows he is a good player, but I much prefer the more planned out songs. He is definitely not as good an improv player as say Malmsteen or Stump.

lol hey i love James LaBrie's voice too. Actually dream theater is my favorite band! Everybody says he sing so bad on stage.. lol i dunno if thats true because i have never seen them live :(

LTE rules, i have both cds and they are absolutely great. Though it can make me bored if i listen too much to it lol ;)

Yeah lots of people bash Labrie for being a bad singer. He has his screw ups, but is that not normal for someone to be singing at his range during a 3 hour concert for each concert date of one leg of a tour?!

I have only about 10 DT boots, Labrie is definitly a better singer now then when he was 10 years ago. Sure he could hit the extremely high parts of "Learning To Live" in 93', but his voice sound like crap when he wasn't pushing it. But!, during the 6DOIT tour, his vocals have since improved. Having seen DT live myself once, it was powerful to hear him and the rest of the band pull off the music that they create.

As for Russels live vocals, he is really good too. Im not too knowlegable about Symphony X's history and band changes, but I think he was singing on the "The Edge Of Sanity" bootleg (Osaka, Japan, 06/23/98) and he isn't perfect either. Although, i saw a video of SX doing "Egypt" at Progpower, and his vox's were friggin godly!. Both talented singers, imo

Rudess' piano solo in the 2nd track of LTE2 is awesome, one of my favorite improvising piano solos. His performance in LTE2 is simply fantastic. Petrucci's guitar sounds really enjoyable in the first LTE.

James Labrie has really (and I mean REALLY) improved live on this last tour. Towards the middle/end of it he was hitting notes he could only dream of on the FII tour.

I love LTE and they are both brilliant albums IMO (especially when you realise that the first was pretty much written and recorded in a week). I think however DT are trying to be like that too much by the way that they write in the studio now. I don't like it. I have to admit I prefer old DT to Symphony X but I feel at the moment Symphony X have more going for them at the moment.

Now to add my piece to the whole singer debate...

3 = James Labrie
2 = Russell Allen
1 = ........ Daniel Gildenlow!!! If you haven't heard him sing you MUST!!!

I agree with a previous poster that the LTE songs can "noodle" along and I don't like that. Noodling can be good at times (Steve Howe being a prime example) but I think LTE get too nonsensicle with it all. I only own the second lp. I do like it to an extent but I honestly have not played it for months. I'm too interested in Symphx at the moment. They are EXACTLY what I like in a prog, symphonic metal band. DT are also great and I think Labrie's voice is technically very strong, and he pulled it all off live when I saw them last year for the MetropolisII tour. In fact, that was one of the most surreal concerts I've ever witnessed. It was just amazingly perfect. I can't wait to see Symphx someday soon.
I am currenly purchasing the rest of Symphx's Cd's. I currently have the live cd, odyessey and DWoT.

I was listening to Rudess - Petrucci unplugged this morning and heard State Of Grace again, for the first time, if you feel me, and I can't believe I forgot it. Awesome song. Beautiful.

And you, my fellow user of the SyX-board, is now officially diagnozed "mentally ill", or "metally ill" in this case ;) :)
