Hitler is described by many as a meek, timid guy initially, people made fun of his funny little moustache and then when his national worker's party or whatever got power then he commanded a bit of respect. Through propaganda they slowly grew until he gained this overconfidence and then he took power of his party, and then was handed the reigns of the country.
I think the that a major factor that enabled him to get so much was power and support from the people adside from fear/propaganda was all the sanctions the German people had on them from WWI. They were still suffering decades later for their previous crimes and then someone stood up and was like, "We don't have to take this anymore" and everyone supported that.
