Filigree technique in jewelry has been used for thousands of years, and the style used in the Opeth "O" and other examples has been in play for a few hundred years for motifs, text and other arts/crafts. I guess it's not that surprising that we'll see similarities.

It would be interesting to trace back the O and see how it's been utilized in the past. I'll leave that to someone else that has extra time on their hands
