Having turned heads with their self-released The Fabulous EP, Missouri’s Lye by Mistake set into motion a series of events that would find them on the receiving end of a recording contract with Lambgoat Records. Christened as the maiden voyage for the label offshoot of a certain infamous website (Lambgoat.com for the mentally impaired), Arrangements for Fulminating Vective marks the beginning of a “beautiful friendship” between the group and label. Subgenres that focus on technicality and perplexing musicianship such as chaos, spazz, math, and –core immediately come to mind, although this trio are much more than a living, breathing tribute to The Dillinger Escape Plan.

Recently, I’ve lost interest with chaotic metallers like Ion Dissonance, Glass Casket, et al because they stick to the same general sound, whereas adventurous outfits such as Between the Buried and Me and lately Lye by Mistake tend to incorporate a cornucopia of genres, subgenres, and styles. That can make for a disjointed album, one that even comes across as a gimmick, but in my experience, records like this are incredibly interesting. Staying power and replay value are usually not their strong suits, though.

Speaking about the music of Arrangements for Fulminating Vective, specifically, fans of The Dillinger Escape Plan will undoubtedly be at home, as well as those who fancy clean, instrumental portions found on Dysrhythmia and Liquid Tension Experiment excursions. Talented doesn’t begin to describe the musicians’ capabilities, and the multifarious keyboard uses will have your jaw vacationing on your carpet. The vocal manipulation is not to be skipped, though it appears too frequently to miss entirely, and Lye by Mistake continually surprise with their unpredictability. The end of “Aboriginal Negatives” will please the Scots, “Ostrich Feathers and Apple Pie” will satisfy both southwestern Americans and Asians, and “900 Seconds in Search of Jerry” has an undeniable Latin flavor tailored specifically for Americans residing between the larger North and South versions – oh yeah, the song titles suck.

Anyway, the 31 minutes on tap aren’t going to be cherished as much as they’re gonna be appreciated. Why? Lye by Mistake bring a uniqueness to a subgenre that too often settles just for punishing technicality without pushing the proverbial envelope. Arrangements for Fulminating Vective might not be worth a damn as far as song titles are concerned (“If We Were Intense, This Song Would be a Boyscout” – ugh), but these guys are exemplary despite my rather menial complaint. Besides the titles, everything else they had to offer I welcomed with open arms. Will I still be able to say that years from now?
