M-Audio BX8a

I have the BX8a and my bassist (doc_backmask) has the BX5a. First of all, when he got the 5as, that's what sold me on the 8as. They're the best monitors I've had yet, and the 5as are really good too, and they don't sound small. I don't think you can do better in this price range or even quite a ways past it.

I have the 5a. I like them although I have nothing else to compare them to other than shitty computer speakers. Maybe they lack in the low end a little. I plan on getting a sub warfer soon though. After hearing kazrog praise them in the above post, I feel happy that I chose them :kickass:

The 5a seems to have some hyped lo and hi end. The 8a seem to be much flatter...which is good.

I've got my eyes on the Yamaha HS80M's, personally...though I've seen on Musiciansfriend.com that they have a package of HS50M's with a sub that costs the same...any idea which would be better? (cuz I figure I wouldn't need the 8 inch cone on the HS80's if I had a sub with the 50's)

Thanks for the input :).

What are the advantages of the 8 vs the 5?

The BX8as sound a little bit flatter to me at high volumes. When you crank the 5as, there's a subtle amount of scooping that happens, because it's obvious that they built the 5as around smaller home studios and lower volumes - and for those purposes, they are great!

No matter what, these speakers have the most even, full, accurate bass I've heard in the price range and you will DEFINITELY want to put them atop a set of Auralex MoPads, otherwise you will get a lot of artificial bass resonation from your desk. Really excellent separation in general on these speakers, I can hear WAY more detail on them than with the Event PS8s that I had previously.

The BX8as make me want to remix our album (again.) I really do feel like this is the best upgrade I've ever made to my studio and I can't say enough great things about these speakers. I prefer them even to more expensive stuff. I eventually want to get Genelecs, but until I can afford them, I will have the BX8as and I probably won't go with anything in between, and even when/if I get the Genelecs I will still hold on to my BX8as because they rule and I will always have a need for them!

so the aurolex pads help that much? I don't have any and was thinking about getting them. Should I get a subwarfer to go with my 5as? I was thinking about getting one as well.

If you have speakers that can put out any bass at all, it's worth it. You don't need a bunch of false bass reverberating through your desk. Most guys who get the 5as end up getting a sub. I'd rather just have the 8as and no sub personally.

Agreed. If you're throwing a sub into the room you have to make room for it, make sure it fits with the speakers, tune the room, check your reference mixes, retune the room, shoot the tuner in the face for failing not once but twice to do his job properly, find a tuner batshit insane to work for the guy who shot Pedro in the face for not doing it right, give up and try it yourself, check reference mixes, cry for about a week, try to hire a tuner under your cat's name... big fucking mess. I'll pass, thanks.

What about systems like the Blue Sky Mediadesk 2.1? Cuz they way I see it, neither of those BX's are gonna be able to accurately represent anything below 50 Hz, and I would hate to just abandon that whole band...
