Mago De Oz

Haven't heard them enough. Is like the Spanish version of Skyclad.

MÄGO DE OZ - Finisterra
(Locomotive Records~2000)
I couldn´t begin to tell you what the songs are about or if there´s a concept here because I don´t know a word of Spanish but what I do know is that these guys produce outstanding Power Metal with lots of Folk influence. I´m a sucker for this kind of stuff considering SKYCLAD are my favourite band. :) These guys manage to be "happy" without resorting to "gayness" and carry some weight with their song structures. You´ve got full choruses, ripping solos and great violin/flute arrangements. This is a two cd release so you have plenty to keep you busy and this is exactly what these guys manage to do the whole time. Awesome stuff.

MÄGO DE OZ - Gaia
(Locomotive Records~2003)
Well after three years of their prior release, "Finisterra", a HUGE tour and many many bad critics this guys had to hear in Spain cause many of the so called metalheads decided that a band couldn’t mix folk with some happy tunes and nice hard-rock/metal, and appear in mainstream TV shows and sell a nice quantity of albums, we have their new album, "Gaia". As "Finisterra" it’s a concept album based in songs about mother earth (Gaia). A long intro, trying to seem the beginning of a sea trip, takes you into a great album of folk and metal, where sometimes you can find references to sound of bands like Whitesnake or even Rainbow but with that special touch of folk happiness that these guys have. This is an outstanding album, maybe in the first listenings is harder to dig than "Finisterra", but when you get into it you can appreciate that the lead guitars are way better than in "Finisterra", overall the guitar sound is much harder than in "Finisterra", though the keyboards, flutes and violins are in the front of the sound. So if you don’t worry about if it’s an album that is selling well or if they have appeared in the mainstream TV and you are able to enjoy really great music go for it. And BTW the package where it comes is really great.

I have Finisterra which is very entertaining if you like folk metal sung in spanish, but I'd also suggest the double live album Folktergeist :)

Don't know about the other albums though...

Actually I HAVE been meaning to get at least one Mago de Oz album (whose name means Wizard of Oz) but haven't gotten around to it. The only song I'm really familiar with is Molinos de Viento (Windmills) of which I've seen the video and heard on the radio. Their sound is sort of folk-metal very melodic and not that heavy. They use violins, flutes and other acoustic instruments in their songs.

That's actually what got my attention, being that I know Spanish, I was like "what the hell is this?"

Sixxswine, if you speak spanish, allow me to reccomend Tierra Santa, a band that many describe as the Spanish Iron Maiden since they borrow heavily from their sound. They're pretty good if you don't mind the sometimes blatant rip-off of Maiden's trademark galloping riffs.
