Maiden is tonight in Condord, CA (San Francisco)! I'll give a report tomorrow. Has anyone seen this leg of the tour? Supposedly there were to be a few more "toys" in the stage set. We'll see. Should be a barn burner though.

Cool! Let us know how they were. Do you know who is opening up? I've got tickets for the June 18th show in Maryland.

Well, I'm back:

Short review:
Holy Fucking Shit

Long Review:

I've seen Maiden 5 times, counting tonight, and they've been great each time, but tonight was easily the best of all of them. Easily.

Maiden just plain fucking destroyed the place.

To begin with, I didn't see any empty seats, and the lawn was packed too. Either sold out, or very close. Not sure.

I think, largely speaking, when Bruce has a good night, Maiden has a good night, and Bruce was having a GREAT night. I've noted his range opening up again over the last couple years, and he is in incredible voice right now, as good as anytime in his career. I know that's a big statement, but as an example he hit the highest high notes in Rime (...then down in falls comes the RAAAAAAAIIIIINNN), Number, Run To the Hills, etc. And speaking of Rime, holy shit. I've always thought it was a great song, a fine song, even a classic, but words can't do justice to the greatness of it tonight. In front of the "old ship" backdrop was a bunch of tattered sails, and Bruce had on an old tattered robe....the stage flooded with smoke, and there were lots of fireworks on lighting rig. It was VERY dramatic, just amazing, and with Bruce singing spot on, it was just thunderous. The version of this tune, and Bruce's performance in general was better than Live After Death. Might sound like bullshit, but I'm serious.

The stage set was nothing short of amazing. The big opening sphinx head with HUGE Eddie behind (but updated a bit), the Somewhere in Time walking Eddie...and just, amazing lights and backdrops.

The crowd was loud and very into it all night. No one budged until the last note.

The key thing though, was the sound...which was immaculate. Clear, separated, and even if you didn't know the words you would have understood them, it was really that clear. And let me say again...BRUCE WAS SPOT ON ALL NIGHT! He was singing too...I mean, not just shouting a lot (though there were a lot of "scream for me's"), but he just really focused in and fucking sold the material. It was a true performance.

I think you all know the setlist, or at least those of you who have been following this tour (or seen it), but the show was very close to two hours. Some chatter between songs (most of it good natured and very funny), but just as often they launched into the next song with no room for breathing. They were all completely fucking antic and energetic. Best setlist, best stage show, best performance...best of everything for any Maiden concert I've seen.

If you are sitting on the fence about this tour....go! Just fucking go.

I laughed a couple times, just for shear joy. I mean, I can think of no other metal band this far into their career with a singer that sounds this good, and a band that is this healthy and vital. Probably one of the top five metal shows I've seen, ever.

Priest, Heaven and Hell, and Motorhead have a LOT to live up to this summer, I can tell you.

Sorry Kittybeast, I didn't see any CA specific shirts, but there were others (Texas and Canada)...but I didn't look that close. I wanted to get a VERY nice shirt with the cover of Powerslave and a colorful back on it...but the line was really long, and I didn't want to miss anymore of the show (I skipped out during Fear of the Dark to use the john).

Ah hell, here's the setlist for those that don't know:

01. Intro - Churchill's Speech
02. Aces High
03. 2 Minutes to Midnight
04. Revelations
05. The Trooper
06. Wasted Years
07. The Number of the Beast
08. Run to the Hills
09. Rime of the Ancient Mariner
10. Powerslave
11. Heaven Can Wait
12. Can I Play With Madness?
13. Fear of the Dark
14. Iron Maiden
-----------------------------
15. Moonchild
16. The Clairvoyant
17. Hallowed Be Thy Name

The whole thing started with a short film on the big screens of the plane taking off (the Maiden Plane), landing, Bruce piloting, the band getting on and off it...stuff like that...and lots of manic fan footage....then WWII airplanes and Churchill's speech, and then BANG.

Iron Maiden rules the world.

Oh, Lauren Harris opened; I only saw her last song. Not my thing. The crowd seemed to like her well enough, so maybe the earlier songs were better. Just kind of Rock and Roll-ish with an average female singer.

Also, when Bruce got to the lyric in Number of the Beast that goes, "I will possess your body and I'll make you burn..." Bruce instead sang, "...San Francisco will fucking burn..." now, he may do that at all the shows, but he really seemed pleased with the crowd, and that has not been the case every time I've seen them.

I'm gonna be in New York with a friend when they are playing Madison Square Garden. I was waffling on it, but I think I'm gonna shell out and pay the second-market price for the tickets; my friend has got to see this.

I saw Maiden last monday at the Phoenix show and it was everything that ElectricWiz says it is. Just plain fantastic. If you're a metal fan you're a Maiden fan, plain and simple.:headbang:

IMO, it´s a shame what Iron Maiden are doing on this tour. They sold us last year a kind of "Powerslave´+"Somewhere"+"Seventh"+"World slavery tour" revival. Well. I can assume that they´re going to play songs previous to "Powerslave". It´s not the best option I guess, playing over and over again "Iron Maiden", "The trooper", "666", "Run to the hills" on this kind of "special" tours.

However I feel absolutely disappointed for the fact of they´re playing "Fear of the dark". Come on men!! You don´t play songs that were singles like "Stranger in a strange land" or "Infinite dreams" and you choose "fear of the dark". It got no sense for me.

Then, we can discuss about what the hell they´re doing with boring songs (and usual on tours) like "Heaven can wait" or "Can I play with play". Hello, Steve, this tour was supposed to be special. Where are "The prophecy", "Caught somewhere in time" or "Alexander the Great"?

What could have been the "unbeatable Maiden tour" has become (always IMO) in a tour for people that never saw Maiden before. For me, the real deal from this tour are "Rime of the ancient mariner" and "Moonchild". The rest... repeated.

PS: In spite of it I´ll see them at Graspop and Spain.

Glad you enjoyed it EWiz!!! I couldn't agree more! The show in NJ in March was fantastic. The ONLY thing that's holding me back from going again in 2 weeks is that they haven't changed the set list.

Bruce truly has never sounded better, and it was the 10th time I've seen them dating back to opening night at Radio City, 1/17/85.

Yeah, it was a killer night. I still feel the afterglow. I had a great time, which is the point, but not always the result of shows. Kinda renewed my faith in concerts. I think I go to too many, and every once in awhile its nice to watch stuff that's larger than life on stage. I went alone, but ran into a friend (who I've seen Maiden with before, actually), and he called me right after while we were both driving home in our respective cars, and we both just talked like excited kids. He said, "They just don't do shows like that anymore..." and he was right...except for Maiden of course, they do have shows like that!

You know what? I was talking with my wife and a couple of friends about this the other day. I'm almost 33, my wife is 30 and likes Maiden, and my friends are a couple of years older than me. We all were talking about the same thing: Why is everyone so happy hearing the same shit by them? They ignore brilliant songs to play average, played and played-again stuff. We couldn't get it as a whole.

I guess they're trying to sell the DVD with a lot of the same stuff, but still...it seems a bit corporate to me. And this is the band that everyone says is so for their fans and not the money...yet they rip on Metallica for "selling-out". Yeah, Metallica puts out shit albums since 1991 but you know what, Maiden hasn't exactly been putting out masterpieces either. The best one they've done recently was Brave new world and the rest you could throw away. But Metallica at least plays interesting sets and throws in old songs they've never played. NOT IRON MAIDEN. They just whore out every piece of merch like KISS and expect people not to notice.

It's just about the MONEY. If they really wanted to be respected as musicians then their set wouyld be 3/4 never played stuff from ONLY Powerslave, SIT, and SSOASS. But they don't do that. ANd heres everyone flocking out to pay over-priced tickets for stuff they've already seen done and done again. Count me and the rest of us out. We can sit in my townhouse and crank the albums out in our own comfort, play what WE WANT TO HEAR and drink our better beer at a better price. Sounds like a good night to me.

Thanks for listening.

The best one they've done recently was Brave new world and the rest you could throw away. HELLO!! A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH IS A BRILLIANT RELEASE!! But Metallica at least plays interesting sets RHYME OF THE ANCIENT MARINIER?!?!? and throws in old songs they've never played. NOT IRON MAIDEN. They just whore out every piece of merch like KISS and expect people not to notice.GREAT BUSINESS MEN, SMART ABOUT IRON MAIDEN HOLDING CO.

It's just about the MONEY. If they really wanted to be respected as musicians THEY ARE VERY WELL RESPECTEDthen their set wouyld be 3/4 never played stuff from ONLY Powerslave, SIT, and SSOASS. But they don't do that. ANd heres everyone flocking out to pay over-priced tickets for stuff they've already seen done and done again.BECAUSE IT'S NEVER ENOUGH MAIDEN Count me and the rest of us out. STAY HOME THEN, LEAVES ROOM FOR OTHER FANS WHO WANT TO BE THEREWe can sit in my townhouse and crank the albums out in our own comfort, play what WE WANT TO HEAR S.S.D.D. THE BAND WILL ALWAYS PLAY #OF THE BEAST, TROOPER, IRON MAIDEN, ETC. THAT IS FOR THOSE FANS WHO DON'T KNOW OF OTHER RELEASES PAST 1986, SO IT'S HARD TO PLEASE ALL OF THE PEOPLE ALL OF THE TIME and drink our better beer at a better price. Sounds like a good night to me.IF THAT SUITS YOU THAN OKAY, I PREFER BEING ON THE RAIL, SCREAMING MY LUNGS OUT AND THRASHING MADLY ALONG WITH THE BAND

Thanks for listening.
