Maiden tonight!

You know what? I was talking with my wife and a couple of friends about this the other day. I'm almost 33, my wife is 30 and likes Maiden, and my friends are a couple of years older than me. We all were talking about the same thing: Why is everyone so happy hearing the same shit by them? They ignore brilliant songs to play average, played and played-again stuff. We couldn't get it as a whole.

I guess they're trying to sell the DVD with a lot of the same stuff, but still...it seems a bit corporate to me. And this is the band that everyone says is so for their fans and not the money...yet they rip on Metallica for "selling-out". Yeah, Metallica puts out shit albums since 1991 but you know what, Maiden hasn't exactly been putting out masterpieces either. The best one they've done recently was Brave new world and the rest you could throw away. But Metallica at least plays interesting sets and throws in old songs they've never played. NOT IRON MAIDEN. They just whore out every piece of merch like KISS and expect people not to notice.

It's just about the MONEY. If they really wanted to be respected as musicians then their set wouyld be 3/4 never played stuff from ONLY Powerslave, SIT, and SSOASS. But they don't do that. ANd heres everyone flocking out to pay over-priced tickets for stuff they've already seen done and done again. Count me and the rest of us out. We can sit in my townhouse and crank the albums out in our own comfort, play what WE WANT TO HEAR and drink our better beer at a better price. Sounds like a good night to me.

Thanks for listening.

My friend Darren agrees with you totally. For me this tour was special for ONLY one reason I never had listen Maiden live in the flesh. But I'm sure that if I had the chance to listen to them before as many had done in this forum, I wouldn't have been interested on this tour.
Morover I agree about they discography a 100%, their previous tour was AMOLAD in its enterity :ill:, and now suddenly they decided to play a tour based on the classic albums? For whom? The old fans know the songs by heart? Needless IMO, I agree with you I rather stay home play the albums and/or see a good DVD.
To new potential fans? Well then it's alright by me, it makes sense and yes it is way to cash money on the safe side, but a band is also a business and business means making money.

Frankly I would have ditch some songs from the setlist, let's review it:

01. Intro - Churchill's Speech
02. Aces High
03. 2 Minutes to Midnight (ditch) play 'Back In The Village'
04. Revelations
05. The Trooper
06. Wasted Years (ditch) play 'Stranger In Strange Land'
07. The Number of the Beast
08. Run to the Hills
09. Rime of the Ancient Mariner
10. Powerslave
11. Heaven Can Wait (ditch) play 'Wratchíld'
12. Can I Play With Madness? (ditch) play 'Purgatory'
13. Fear of the Dark (ditch) play 'Running Free'
14. Iron Maiden
-----------------------------
15. Moonchild
16. The Clairvoyant (ditch) play 'The Evil That Men Do'
17. Hallowed Be Thy Name

Of course no matter how well crafted a setlist is some fans will be dissapointed, but you cannot play all the albums completely.

Well, I know Kitty and Pabla will disagree with me on this one. But it is all a matter of perception. I guess you perceive the big picture situation more like me than the others.

Thanks for sniffing.:)

songs i'd like to have seen:
phantom of the opera
killers
22 accacia avenue
where eagles dare
to tame a land
caught somewhere in time
alexander the great
infinite dreams
seventh son of a seventh son

Flight of the Icarus would be cool.

That would have been my wet dream. The best and my favorite ever iron Maiden song.

Good choices, although I would let ' Infinite Dreams' out and put ' Only The Good Die Young' from the same album or ' Prodigal Son' instead.

Wyvern, you're so much more eloquent than I am regarding this thread.

Any band who's been around for the long haul can have the same thing happen, so many fans want a certain song to be played, how is a band ever to decide what the set list should be?

Still, out of the umpteen times I've seen Maiden, Sat. nights show at Irvine was definately in the top 5!

Thanks I take it as a compliment :saint:

I agree with you that the longevity brings along a potential problem chosing the setlist.

For example I have seen DP twice in my life with different line ups. And they still rely mostly on classic material than on stuff or their latest albums. As a fan I want to hear new songs as well as old ones, otherwise the show become so repetitive that isn't worth to see it again.

I don't either the other extreme all new material and zero classics like Maiden did in their previous tour. Normally a band on tour plays more of the current album plus some classics (you see that a lot on live albums), but in the end anyway comes to the same point: you can't make all fans happy all the time
