I don't know if its the same everywhere but here in SLC UT there seems to be a major shortage of bass players. Please let me correct myself....a major shortage of METAL bass players. Is this the same everywhere?

No, it seems to be an epidemic everywhere. And if you do find a bassist, more than likely their just a guitarist or plays the bass like a guitar. Meaning, you'd be better off just buying your own bass and playing the songs yourself.

Here in copenhagen thats not the biggest problem - but drummers, they are impossible to find. Somehow the drummers nowaday just wants to play indie-rock... it so har to find a drummer that have the skills to play metal :-(

Haha. here in my town there are many drummers who wanna/(think they can) play metal, but only three who can. :loco:

I put it down to the untrained pre-musician ear not being able to distinguish the bass in many metal mixes, or not realising the importance of bass in a metal mix (live and studio).
I base that on not only the shortge of good bassists in Australia, but the lack of talented, competent bass players who are in bands yet refuse to realise that they are shit and can't hold time. That's not to say there are no good bass players, though.

or there are those decent bass players from Melbourne who move and become a broad :D

 :zombie: Just Kidding.

Good call Neb. I still find it hard to hear bass, even on Doomsday Machine. ( I am not a bassplayer though, I'm just half a guitarist) :heh:
OT: Going to Slayer in April?

I know a couple, although they're rare. It a huge difference recording and playing with a REAL bass player than a guitarist-who-wasn't-good-enough bass player

Na, was thinking about it since htey're playing on my birthday, but I was a bit late with tickets, and I'm not the biggest Slayer fan anyway. I'd rather save my hard earned for Evergrey and Nile/ Decapitated :kickass:

Where are Slayer playing in Melb? They were here in December with LOG, In Flames, and Bodom....brutal.

The Haunted are back here in May....get in!

speaking as a bass player (bass was my first instrument) metal isn't as interesting when it comes to playing bass. Other styles are more fun to play, so when im just jamming by myself, i tend to play rock, punk, funk, r&b... with most metal groups, bass is an afterthought.

the few metal bands that have interesting bass to me:
dimmu borgir
opeth
dillinger escape plan

thats all i can think of...

If you haven't already, check out the bass playing in DEATH. That's some great stuff in my opinion. I feel metal bass playing can be really great, but it gets ignored sometimes. It's too bad.

However, now that I'm actually thinking about it, I think it's harder for me to find really good guitar players then bass players. Bass players tend to be competent if they play, but a lot of guys just fuck around on guitar and then suddenly they're a guitar player, but not to many people really devote themselves to it. Still, I think bass players in general are harder to find. Also, perhaps I can ship you guys some drummers from Massachusetts. I haven't had trouble at all on that front. :)

oh jeezus....Mastodon will sound like shite in there (like virtually every other band I saw there)....the last thing that venue needs is a band that specialises in "woolly" tones. It'll be one big low-end mess. They were here with Tool not long ago great band but their mix wasn't the best even though it's a better sounding venue than Rod Laver..

I've been a bass player for nearly 20 years and have to admit that there's only a few metal bassists who inspire me. Mostly rock bassists are amongst my faves.

In metal, Rob Trujillo used to (past tense for obvious reasons) be a monster player, Ellefson was always cool, DiGiorgio is awesome (but unfortunately ends up a bit buried in most mixes unfortunately), Campbell from LOG is outstanding (and is also buried), and one can't forget the immortal Steve Harris with whom I go thru phases of loving/loathing.

For me, I'm into tone and taste more than chops. Used to be the other way around when I was a kid, but that shit gets old eventually. Doug Pinnick is up there with my faves. Paul Malinowski from the now defunct Shiner had simply the heaviest bass sound I ever heard - it helped he also produced and engineered their last two albums.

Melbourne has awesome bass players

Evan Harris, Dean Gaudoin, Rob Little, Mark Walters

Its DRUMMERS we can't find down here !!!!

I remember Rob from years ago....nice guy, but he's more of a jazz/fusion dude. Most of the bass players from when I was gigging in Melbourne up until the mid-90's were too busy trying to get in with the jazz crew and trying to blow Virgil Donati and Frank Gambale. Those guys could play every lick in the book but I hated that shit.

There was another dude, Guy Palmer who was a brilliant bass player and used (may still do) run The Bass Player shop in South Melbourne. That fucker could play. He got me a great deal on my first SVT rig....
