You're right, he's no 'genius.' Kai wears his influences on his sleeve--from the obvious Queen in Armageddon and Man on a Mission, to the Priest in Heart of a Unicorn.
But he's got talent, and he knows how to get GREAT performances on tape. The production values on GR albums are top-notch.
I will say this: GR was one of the first true Power Metal I listened to. That's probably why I don't mind the repetitive-ness of it. If I had been listening to loads of Power Metal earlier, and then tried GR, I probably would dismiss it too. But GR was one of the first for me, so I guess that gives them a bit more license in my household
Heavy Metal Universe, though, is an atrocious song. No way in hell that should *ever* make it into their live set. It's just terrible.
