Maple Cross –Promo 1/02
Self Released – Demo – 2002
By Russell Garwood

Long running Finish band Maple Cross released this promo in 2002. Having produced numerous demos since the 80’s, the group split in the 90’s only to be reformed with one original member.

The band play relatively aggressive metal, with distinct rock influences. Melodic guitars often make effective use of dual melodies, and in places almost sugar-coated riffs make for accessible music. This is aided by black-metal orientated screams which add energy to the already dynamic music, and sung sections which help create anthemic choruses. The drums take the sporadic time changes in their stride, and while not overly complex, help create a tight rhythm section. The bass isn’t especially prominent, but has some solo elements and seems well performed.

Overall this is an impressive demo, which mixes ferocity with accessibility very well, finding a healthy balance between the two. A very professional release, and I look forward to hearing more from the band in the future.
