It doesn’t help that liking "deathcore" music is certainly an acquired taste; Campbell’s rebirth as Maria Campbell wasn’t exactly bouncing, the band’s cult following didn’t warm-up immediately to its new members and decidedly new sound. The band kept its metal and hardcore roots but apparently there was a clamor from the fans for the former vocalist, Eroll Tecson. With no burned bridges between Maria Campbell and its former vocalist, the band proceeded to revitalize its line-up with new members: vocalist, Enrie Estevez and Joel Ong and Rodney Nellas on guitars. From mainstream deathcore, the changes in the line-up and perhaps a collective shift in the perspective of the group resulted into a new sound that is perhaps more complex and mature.
As Enrie Estevez describes it, listening to their new music probably requires some sort of warming-up to the idea of a new sound especially for the band’s former fans. The change is inevitable; with the members’ now more heightened sensibility for their craft as musicians. Their music is continually evolving with the addition of more progressive elements and a new lyrical point of view. Emerging themes in their songs include political and social awareness, zeitgeist and yes, the occasional introspection into the not-so-cheery side of life.
Maria Campbell lingers not over lost fans but looks forward to listeners who are craving for new and thought- provoking music in the South East Asian Metal scene especially here in the Philippines.
Maria Campbell is a Cebu- based band composed of Enrie Estevez on vocals, Joel Ong and Rodney Nellas on guitars, Nicolo Nimor on drums and Rodrigo “Porms” Porminal Jr. on bass.
