Slight update... guy directed me to a thread on The Gear Page which had a post from the guy he bought it from:

"I used to own this amp.... when I bought it, it was modded for a master volume.... then brought back to "normal", recapped and a new power transformer from Nashville Amplifier Service a few years back."

So the tranny isn't original, but doesn't Friedman put in new tranny's with his mods?

I'm going to call Friedman next week after I pick this up, if the HBE mod doesn't include a tranny I'll just get a Heyboer or MM I think.

*edit* power transformer is totally different from output tranny - as huge a difference in tone?

*edit2* How hard/dumb would it be to get this thing converted to a 50 watter? I know it's just 3db but the headroom difference is nutty.

To turn the amp into a 50 watter, pull either the inner pair or the outer pair. Then drop your impedance selector down to 1/2 the cabinet's impedance rating (use the 8 ohm setting for a 16 ohm load and the 4 ohm setting for an 8 ohm load). Probably have to rebias also. The only reason I would do this is if I wanted to run some vinatge expensive valves but did not want the expense of having to buy a matched quad. Otherwise I would not do it.

Got a mate selling one for 400 euro from '77, thinking of picking it up. It's not currently working but he reckons its just a tube gone. says if its anything more serious he'll sell it for less

Wanted to do this to my 2210 but my tech said it wouldn't reduce the power to 50%. More like 70% or something because other parts that are used in the amp are sized for 100 Watts and therefore those would have to be changed as well to make it really 50 Watts. Unfortunetaly I can't remember which ones they were. Was about a year ago or so that I spoke to him about that.

I'm actually not going to bother with pulling powertubes or adding a half power switch - the master volume on Friedman modded amps is apparently one of the best in the world as far as getting good tones at lower volumes.

Now to decide on Naked vs. Kitchen Sink mod...
