Mastering Tutorials !!!

final mix at -3db? its not suppose to be at -6db?
out ceiling in the L3 at -2db? i ussually put it at -0.2 or -0.3
and dont let the atten bar light up? i read that if it not pass more than 6 is ok , is it true?

correct me if im wrong plz (im a n00b)

i would say that if the atten bar doesn't light up, the limiter is doing nothing more than amplifying or normalizing the track to the maximum level you set, in this case -2 db
attenuating 6 db with an L3 however seems like quite a lot to me. i usually find everything more than 2-3 db sounds realy ugly.

what do you think is a good level on the Atten bar of the L2?
what level i must never exceed?

If mastering was only as simple as making something loud...

Well for my needs and purposes, it pretty much is - everything else I take care of at the mixing stage!

And Zeronaut, I found things got pretty pumpy/distorted if I was attenuating more than 8 db or so (back when I was using a pirated copy before I changed my ways and bought the superior and cheaper Elephant :)), but that was without using any clippers, so that might help.

listen to you mixes on everythign possible from ear buds to the most hi fi stereos translation is the key to mastering

a very good room and a great set of FULL RANGE speakers make all the difference in the world. Something that accurately goes as low, and high as possible like a good set of focal's or B&W's

first time i listened to one of my mixes on a great set of speakers dropped my jaw to the floor, i realized how much work i had left before i could accomplish a good master.....

im very luck to have a very good friends who won the i a s c a national champions of sound quality in car audio. it helped my reference skills tremendously working in there shops on his with the rta meters and a few very good sets of trained ears.......

same applies to mastering

i never go past -3 attn. Avg rms level as loud as -7 or -8, but i stick to -9.0 to -10 i find that a good spot for loudness to keep Some dynamics..and not be metallica

Good advice but I was just saying there is more to it than volume alone. I wouldn't ever discredit anyone's mixing/mastering abilities here it's just volume seems to be the most discussed topic pertaining to mastering on most forums which I find odd. I would call slapping a limiter and/or clipper on your master buss maximizing before I would call it mastering.

And you are right, a good room and speakers are critical.

Well if you've already got a good, punchy mix with a good frequency balance, then, well, what more is there? Sure, there's even-ing out the levels from song to song, but if you tracked and mixed everything with the same setup, then that shouldn't even be an issue, so beyond eq on the master track, I'm kinda at a loss to think what else there might be...

have you ever had a properly mastered track from a reputable mastering house, it will smoke anythign you can do in your home studio.......hands down any professional will tell you that

songs differentiate in freq balance / notation from song to song on any album...your not playing the same thing every song are you???
its about making the composition translate well on a variety of systems and increasing the overall impact of the songs dynamic range not just slapping a limiter on the 2 bus and cranking it up

i ran live sound at a 30000+ seat venue ...the line array systems we used crushed crappy mastering jobs when the 24 18's hit you can tell who had there shit properly mastered

there is always room for improvement in any mix i have never heard a perfect mix some come close and the m.e. takes it to another level....why people like andy stay busy 24-7

Fair enough, but far beyond my level as a home hobbyist!

i only have like 7 years recording, learn new things everyday . i got extremely serious about about 2 years ago and have not stopped, i am doing it full time now. started doing big live sound events at 16 as an assistant to my uncle...then found protools, too bad i cant afford a hd system still.

i am not trying to be a dick i just here it too much anymore that mastering is basically just making a mix loud.

Hey, no problem man, I always enjoy learning new stuff, and can totally eat my humble pie! My only goal for recording is to be able to make my own music sound the best it can (within reason); I couldn't care less if I never make a dime off of recording, so I have more, shall we say, modest goals :D
