So with these albums it says there is a heavy and a 'mellow' album. I'm wondering if this means it's split in two, like I know Damnation is soft but does this mean deliverence is 'totally' heavy, or just a standard Opeth release?

Deliverence has all the trademarks of normal opeth stuff, with mellow and heavy parts.. But the heavy parts are heavier, and very different, and the mellow parts are just amazing... The album on a whole is excellent, so fear not...

I don't really like it. It sounds like there is a big effect on Mikael's voice, and it just doesn't fit in... I understand that its meant to be a contrast but it just doesn't do anything for me apart from sound bad.

I agree. I've heard some people say that it sounds more evil than Demon of the Fall, which imo is way outta league. I don't think anything can compare to those layered low-ass growls at the beginning of that song.

If you're referring to the part where the mellow section gets buried underneath an onslaught of some of the most brutal riffery ever to grace an Opeth album, I wholeheartedly agree. My ass got kicked sideways when I heard that.
