Matt Barlow joins Pyramaze?

So you think Schaffer will change his writing style?
From my RC interview with Schaffer...

Zod: Do you plan on approaching the way you write any differently, or the way you design vocal melodies any differently, with Tim as opposed to Matt?

Jon: No.

Zod: No?

Jon: Nope. I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of stuff Tim writes. He doesn’t have a history as a songwriter. He’s never really been given that opportunity and I’m giving him an opportunity. And it will be interesting to see what he comes up with. He knows I’m not going to use it if it doesn’t work, just to be nice to him. But I won’t approach anything as far as melodies (differently), because I’m a songwriter. The songs are what they are. I don’t write for a singer, I write for me, I write for the song. The guys that are performing… the reason they’re performing is because I hired them, because I have faith that they can do it. It’s all got to be honest and from the heart. If you try to do something that’s not genuine, the people are going to pick up on it right away. Whether they even realize why they don’t like it or not, it doesn’t really matter. But I know why they wouldn’t. If it’s from the heart, everyone is going to get it.

You know what...

This is awesome news. I like Lance Kings vocals, but god damn... Barlow over the style Pyramaze does? This is a fucking WET DREAM.

I anticipate recordings and tour highly.

So you think Schaffer will change his writing style? I didn't even think that was possible for him, just as Demons & Wizards is basically IE with Hansi. Be interested to hear it though....I dunno, the two Priest albums and Glorious Burden (disc 1) were pretty disappointing.

Not so much his writing style as writing songs that Owens will supply his own melodies to from the word go, where Schaffer can adapt to Owens' vocals as the songs are created rather than having tracks already laid down that Owens simply supplied vocals to after Barlow's were "deleted". I think the bottom line is that Owens will sound even fresher when the entire project is "fresh" from the word go. Know what I mean?

I disagree about the Glorious Burden. It's really growing on me over time. I think the initital disappointment I had was more of a need to adapt to Owens' style over the IE sound. I think it's extremely solid.

I actually have a feeling the band will incorporate a style that's a bit more aggressive/heavy to accomodate Barlow's vocal techniques. I don't know that for sure obviously, but just a hunch. Regardless, I'm with you on the "can't wait" notion. :kickass:

And I'd like to join the club of whom have wood. I've got a bamboo tree in my pants, and it ain't leaving any time soon.

I'm excited!

LOL - why does Barlow's head look grafted on digitally?

they all look digitally grafted on there. like it was five individual shots of the band members, and then placed on the background

Matt Barlow said:
Up from the ashes, back from the depths, when the voices have risen, fire becomes flesh!

ooo shivers. I'm slightly aroused

if they do, they better kick that keyboardist now

Pyramaze does already have songs/riffs that definitely fall in the heavier end of the power metal spectrum to my ears. To be honest Im having a hard time picturing how Barlow would sing some of these tunes, regardless Im sure this will still be excellent.

I'm wondering more about the vibe. While Pyramaze has a number of fairly heavy songs, there's nothing dark or sinister about them. Barlow definitely brings that vibe. So it will be interesting to see if they tweak things a bit.

yeah, good point, but I don't know...I'm going in with low expectations. Possibly less of a concern with Owens and more dubious about Schaffer's last few outputs. His work has been really "hit and miss" this decade:

D&W 1
Horror Show
Glorious Burden
D&W 2 <- actually, there was nothing "hit" about this, just total "miss"

So it all looks a little inconsistent. Add to the fact that Owens hasn't exactly taken the world by storm (being attached to some horrible Priest efforts)...this next IE output is make or break time (for Owens).

Now Barlow pretty much stomped IE on the map. Pyramaze also released two excellent albums, and aside from the gettysburg trilogy, both were probably better than anything IE related since D&W 1.

Put that altogether, and holy mackerel, if I'm going in with low expectations for the new IE, my expectations for the new Pyramaze are now through the roof!! :loco:

But who knows, the new IE could become the album of the century, and the new Pyramaze will suck, and Barlow will disappear forever, and Halford will join IE. :loco:
