Anyone remember 16? Ah, I see most of the real sludgecore afficianados have just fallen off their chairs, clutching their copies of the bludgeoning 'Drop Out' album to their chest as they fall. Well, the duo behind that suffocating brew of doom metal and sludgecore, Jason Corley and Bobby Ferry, have reunited and brought in Chris Jones on bass for this latest attempt to cave in our skulls.

Blending together elements of doom, sludge and metalcore into a thick, leaden slab of sheer imposing heaviness, Maxmillion have delivered eight tracks of metal that doesn't so much push the envelope as evaporate the glue from the stamp. Pure rock grooves such as the Motorhead-on-downers intro riff of 'Pure Black' are coupled with the bludgeoning, stop-start rhythms of 'The Angel That Fell Through Earth', all delivered with Bobby's alternate tortured, gravelly cries and smooth, persuasive clean tones.

Jason, too, can still bludgeon a drum kit like he always could, adding punishing percussive assault to the tectonic guitarwork and Chris Jones' Vinum Sabbathi bass work. Faster material like 'Night Of The Permanent Scar' bucks the mid-tempo trend and shows that Maxmillion easily hold their own against newer sludge acts like Charger and that the benefit of experience can always beat youthful exhuberance.

Great stuff for sludgecore fans looking for a new thrill, or old 16 obsessives looking to fill the hole left by their passing.
