Some people say Maynard lost his edge when he did APC. I don't think he did, but I was curious as to what some of you think.

Lateralus is a good album.

APC is not great. But it's a different style to Tool, so i can't really judge his performance on APC compared to Tool.

I rather dislike Tool. They are called geniuses just because they are more talented than nu-metal, but that doesn't really mean much. I think Maynard can sing when he lets loose (like on some shitty Deftones album where he lets go and sounds great) but mostly he just does this caustic whine. Annoying.

the fuck, "edge"? maynard isn't a thrasher or a growler. he does hypnotic, subdued music, followed by raging, but still polyrhythmic and enchanting climaxes. APC was simply a more brief expansion on the more melodic side of Tool's music.

Tool is way overated.. They aren't that good.

Maybards singing style was ruined by APC, and it was the same with laterelus.

Laterelus was a massive dissapointment.

I quite like Tool. I sometimes aliken music to films. A german director once said "To watch with innocence is bliss".

If you kind of let some of the hypnotic and subtle varicances of Tool sink in...it sounds pretty good....plus, Maynard obviosly is influenced by Bill Hicks so thats got to be cool.

given that if you analyse anything enough...you could really appreciate it but then again...you could hate it as well.

Tool are pretty good if you ask me. Lateralus is very different from metal, far more laid-back and hypnotic. And for a lot of people thats not what they want, but that doesnt make them overrated, i think they do what they are trying to do fucking well, and they do some stuff so well that you dont notice how good they actually are. But if they dont rock your boat then youll call them 'boring' or whatever, as expected. They have their place in my music collection, even if the guitarist only uses 1 scale on the whole Lateralus album.

But on maynard, i think his singing got far less inventive and amazing for Lateralus, and i thought it suited APC perfectly so i wont say he could have done better there. But yeh Lateralus didnt have as many moments when his voice and vocal lines amazed me (although there are a few!!).

I think watching Tools film clips sums up their music perfectly, they arent action sequences and constantly changing. They are all one scene that moves along and progresses at a slow rate. Just like their music.

They do things a lot different to most bands out there (yes im including non-commercial metal in that statement as well!) if you ask me.

I think tool is a great band ,, aswell as apc,,, I find that APC is just a less complicated version of tool ,, maynards vocals in apc are totally different than in tool ,, so you can really compare the two ,, but to me they are similar bands .

What I meant was that alot of people say that since he joined APC he's not as good with Tool as he used to be. Maybe 'edge' was the wrong word, but it was all I could think of.

I love the Tool/APC filmclips.

I just bought a limited edition/collectors edition DVD with all the filmclips, and a CD with 70 minutes of live and/or unreleased songs.

Yeah, Salival is a nice item. You'll enjoy the Hush video, which is an extra from Opiate.

I think Lateralus was definitely influenced by Maynard's work with APC. I definitely prefer Tool to APC, but I still enjoy them. I can relate more to Tool's older work not to say I don't like Lateralus. I just haven't really connected with it.
