to my understanding, the Sadduccees and Pharisees plotted against Jesus because he represented a threat to their position and influence. But to say they constituted the entire Jewish people is off course wrong.

Jesus' death merely sealed a new covenant. If Jesus had lived to be 70, who knows, the movement which formed around him might have merely been another sect of Judaism.
