Hi guys, now I'm affected by g.a.s and I'm loocking to buy an used mesa v-twin rack preamp.
I tryed it 5 years ago, but I can't remenber now if the sound was good.
I know that this preamp is for hard-rock, but I think that with a pedal in front it will sound brutal, what do you think??

ha ha!! yea, I'm gasin also about the mesa formula pre.....I don't Know what I'm going to buy.....

i tried the vtwin pedal a while back @ a friends house. sounded a lot like the thick and frizzy character of the recto, but then again i didn't have all the time in the world to tweak it, it was going into a bad head (don't remember which one) and i was playing it on his guitar.

i don't know much about the rack vtwin but i know the pedal was supposed to basically be a preamp clone of the rectifier circuitry. i also know that john petrucci used it a couple of times to track some solos in the early 90's in a mesa boogie interview i read years back.

as far as your application for it i guess if it is the preamp section of a recto you should be able to get rectoish tones as far as the preamp is concerned. keep in mind that you also need to have a good poweramp to make it sound good. obviously the 2:100 recto power amp would yield the closest results... since essentially pairing a vtwin and a 2:100 is like a scaled down version of a rectifier head.

I don't think that, I played for years with it...I think it sound really good..I have no complains about that poweramp.probably you hate el34s?

no, I love them in my Simulclass, loved them in my VHT and in my JMP2203....
I just hate that poweramp, bbut that's just my opinion ;)....

not that it really sounds bad (if you like marshall) what I hate about it is that no matter which preamp you choose it sounds like a modded marshall head....either modded in one or the other direction, but still like a modded marshall...
so with a v-twin you won't come close to a recto but just to a JCM800 with some kind of preamp-mod...

and that wasn't just my opinion...our other guitarist used to own one as well, and he as well said it's total crap compared to the 395 and engl (el 34) he's using now (the 395 is still better than the engl though).

If you want to have the classic 800 bite in a rack it's the way to go of course....not necessarily bad thing if you like it and don't need anything else)

YMMV

Yes I understand, when I'll have the v-twin, I'll post some clips.
But what power amp is the 395?
