I have some DEP (Calculating Infinity) and Messhuggah (Destroy Erase Improve). Neither ever get any airplay, but maybe I'll pull out the DEP again soon.

J. is of course calling into question what makes a good musician, because I would consider Quorthon to have been an extremely talented musician, even if his chops weren't legendary.
I'm not saying he was horrible, and I haven't heard every single song the dude recorded, but people hardly ever say "Hey, you should really buy Hammerheart to hear Quorthon's stellar vocals and his masterful guitar solos."

Give me good music, no contest. Good musicians can create beautiful music, no doubt, but they can also create some of the most awful trite known to man. For proof, look no further than Dream Theater.

I fucking love DT. If I was on a desert island with only 1 album to listen to intil my death. Awake would be it. ;)

I dig Dream Theatre other than LaBrieCheese. Don't own any because I know I'd never listen to it, but when my prog-head buddy plays them it's cool.

I really enjoy Meshuggah, however I see where J and others are coming from. I think some bands like DEP and MEshuggah, and say Ephel Duath etc, are bands one listens to only for their technical wizadry or odd time sigs etc. Perhaps one should never expect anything other than hearing some guy do amazing things on the guitar etc? Now great musicians-and I think Meshuggah does it- can do amazing things in the context of a excellent song--like King Crimson.

Ephel Duath has much more emotion than both bands. That's why Ephel Duath is better than both , should I infer anything?
