Messing with the Free PodFarm

Hey CJ,

Couple questions. Is there a benefit to running into a D.I. and then into the interface? I've been running my guitar straight into my Firebox.

Will I have a hotter/stronger tone this way?

Also, which model did you use to nail the Oceano tone? I prefer the SLO model so far with Free PodFarm.

thanks

-Joe

Technically, I couldn't tell you the difference but I definitely hear quite a difference.

I'm only using an Mbox2 at the moment but I'm getting a clean, crisp as fuck sounding DI track using the ACTIVE Radial Pro48 > XLR out to the XLR preamp input on the Mbox2 with of course, phantom power engaged as well as the pad on both the DI and the Mbox.

I definitely think the signal is hotter/cleaner/stronger when using a dedicated DI box to bring your guitars signal to mic-level.

I strongly recommend the Pro48! It's affordable and sounds great!

We actually did a test and used the DI in on the Chameleon Labs 7602 (w/Carnhill Tranny's) and the tone was significantly colored and wayyy noiser, but that is to be expected when using such a colored piece to try and capture a pristine signal! =D

EDIT: Forgot to tell you what I used to get the Oceano tone. I really think a lot of it has to do w/the guitar we were using, which is an absolutely incredible sounding Ibanez (not sure of the model, either 7620 or some kind of Prestige? IDK) with an EMG 81-7 in the bridge.

I was actually looking for a tone to monitor through for the upcoming EP we're producing and ended up on the Treadplate Dual, boosted w/the Screamer w/ the Treadplate cab, 67 condenser mic and about 15% room. Standard settings, really!

I think the input makes a hugh difference.

I usealy use podfarm at home with my m-audio fasttrack pro (instrument line input)

In my small studio I have a mackie onyx 1640 and once I used the instrument input of the onyx and helllll yeeaahhhhhh.

It sounded 1000times better!!!!!!!!

More open/less compressed/more like a real amp

cheers

sick sound bro, have you compared amplitube metal to pod farm? if you so which one do you prefer

But the problem to me isnt the gain but the sound itself. Sounds too thin, too fizzy and dont have that texture like the real deal. But could be me, maybe I am too noob to work something real good of podfarm.

It's never gonna sound like the real deal, but with the inbuilt 4 band semi parametric EQ and a bit of patience you can get plenty of mileage out of POD Farm. The key is working out what frequencies to wipe out to make it sound a bit smoother and a little more natural.
