Metal 2025

A few recommendations from the best new stuff I heard in January:

Iron Griffin - Gate Tower
This EP sounds even more rugged and ancient than the usual IG material. Maija (a woman) doesn't sing on this, Oskari does, which definitely adds to its more rough sound. Good ol' epic trad metal.

Drunk Thrasher - Posercorpses
Dunno what it is about this project that hits me so hard, but one dude (from Poland) just belting out primitive lo-fi necro thrash and not giving a fuck about trends is awesome. He's actually managed to add a lot of dynamics to his solo thrash which is kinda unique for one-man bands. Closing the EP out with an instrumental track was an odd choice though... but still a good thrashing time.

Larvae - Arousal of the Crawling Creature
Seems like these Italians have finally found their sound, because this absolutely smokes their previous material. The mixture of Impetigo-style deathgoregrind and weird doom is really sick. The title track is so demented and acid-tinged, I love it.

Asedio - La interminable lucha
A truly great and passionate Chilean heavy metal EP by the lads in bands like Critical Defiance, Demoniac and Ripper. I have no fucking clue what the singer is saying but I'm trying to sing along anyway! No fat to trim here either, just pure headbanging fist-pumping metal glory.

Pentagram - Lightning in a Bottle
Regardless of how you might feel about Bobby or how his vocals have aged, the band sounds fucking amazing right now. That 70's swagger/groove is definitely in full swing here.

Listening to the new Pentagram now. Pretty damn good, with a few softer parts to make it interesting. I could do with some songs being a bit more catchy maybe. Will take me a few listens to figure out where I'd rank it against some of their others. They're a very rare case of a band where I like the 2nd half of their discography more than the 1st half, even without considering the First Daze Here comps.
