Metal Blade Records used to rule once upon a time...

not for nothing, but Primoridal would have to be packaged with a bunch of bigger bands to do a decent US tour ...

Vader, well ... they are veterans in some sense, but still they play small gigs in the US.

They are playing Memorial Day at the Knitting Factory with Destruction and Kataklysm ... you going to that?
that should be a great thrash attack gig :kickass:

OK.

You lost me...
What I'm saying is that I think overall, nu was an absolutely shit movement, but I enjoy(ed) a few bands. Metalcore, which I don't really enjoy, doesn't offend me like a lot of nu groups did. If that makes sense.

If not, see you in the boobs thread. :loco:

Exactly.

Thing is, I'm not blind to the fact that metalcore sells more records and Metal Blade are a business, but they're obviously just not interested in supporting "true" metal artists anymore, and haven't been for a while. It's just a change of direction, which is fine, but right about now, I'd take Century Media or Nuclear Blast over Metal Blade and that's saying something.

That does sound fucking amazing. So that's Monday May 29th? That could rule.... :kickass:

Honestly, I look at what Metal Blade are signing and I want to vomit. Then I watch Headbangers Ball and quite frankly, I'm embarrased.

Maybe it's the timeframe, but right about now, the 90's mainstream metal stuff doesn't remind me of anything THIS miserable.

oh yeah ... there is nothing like the sound of Mike from Destruction's guitar sound live ... fuck ... it's like air guitar heaven :kickass:

info about place/show: http://www.knittingfactory.com/show.php?event_num=58750
only thing ... this Knitting Factory is like the size of my living room, so a sellout is a big possibility ... great place for show I hear

Re: Metal Blade ... I think they try more that you give them credit for ... they did become a pretty big label and probably finance the release of smaller tr00 bands with the $ from the bigger crappy ones ... I mean Slagel IS a survivor from the era ... so he did something right

Brian Slagel is the owner/CEO of the whole thing. Cool guy, had dinner with him once, he has a lot of stories to tell.

Metal Blade over the years has had many of the classics signed to them.

One funny bit of trivia, they had Goo Goo Dolls first, then somebodye else signed em and well... the rest is shitty history.

Yeah, but they're not much bigger than Century Media or Nuclear Blast, and you don't really see those labels stooping to such depths. Then again, you've got Nuclear Blast signing pure hardcore acts now like Agnostic Front. CM at least created a sub label for the lolcore stuff.

I don't know, I just look at the line up of acts on all those Metal Massacre comps and I think of how long ago that really was.

If you're talking Pantera, White Zombie, etc. then FUCK YEAH!!!

But if you're talking Saliva, Papa Roach, and that kind of shit, I'll go buy a Killswitch Engage album and do the happy dance.

You know, I don't even know what mainstream metal is today, no lie. I haven't turned the radio on in about 24 months, Howard Stern left K-ROCK, and then the radio station in turn abandoned all it's rock roots.

90% of those bands never made it past those comps though ... because they sucked ... even by old school standards.

I still say that in all music, 50% of making it is the personality of the band ... and lets face it ... a lot of great bands (musically) could not "sell" themselves to make it big ... so you need to sign bands that make $.

I mean Nemtheanga was hanging our with gugs while in NY ... that is not very rock star  :loco:

Metallica
Cirith Ungol
Overkill
Slayer
Virgin Steele
Trouble

almost all the bands on MM V.... etc.

Sure, there must have been a bunch of shit too, but at least they were digging them out from the underground. Today, the label ignores the underground entirely.

Let's face it, all the 'real' metal bands they've got are very established. It's not like they're taking a risk with anyone outside of metalcore.

I'd love to know what personality Black Dhalia Murder has, and how many records they've sold.

not sure where these great underground bands are? ... you would think they would be easier for labels to find with the internet and all ...
honestly I can't find any even on my own ...

i mean ... we have Distorted Mind for God's sake :loco:

let's face it ... today's NEW musicians are pretty fucking uninspired

Practically 90% of bands discussed here are underground IMO. In other words, they're either (a) not established acts, or (b) not following trends.

Labels like The End or Cruz del Sur support the acts they believe in, before the acts that will bring in the $$.

I can see both sides obviously, and that's a different debate, but all I'm pointing out in this thread is what types of bands Metal Blade USED to be interested in.

It's just funny how they're in a different universe now.

That's why I love the current stoner movement. I mean yeah, it obviously owes a lot to 70's rock, but there's some real quality to be found there.
