Hi, I am a 15 year old guitarist from Chicago Illinois. I am looking for other people in my area to start up a thrash/death metal band. My influences include Arch enemy, Deicide, Vital Remains, In Flames, Classic Metallica, Pantera, etc. I want to start a band to just practice with for the moment, no serious gigs yet, until a lot of good material is made. I am limited with space at my house so anyone interested that knows of any place we could play at please email me at Metalhead0688@msn.com.
I don't have a decent amp at the moment (just a small GLX Crate practice amp) but if anyone replies and is interested, good gear will be purchased!!!!!!!!!!! Please e-mail me or reply to this.

Not if he were me, when i was 15 i had been playing for 5 years (yeah i started when i was 10 haha) now im 20 though so i have one upped that.

I guess I was just going by my experience. I got a guitar at 14 & have been noddling with one since about that time. Not that I'm any better at it. Which is a bit disappointing....

its not the years that count but the hours of practice really

I will second that.

I have an uncle who has been playing for 25 years and while he is good. He is far from great.

Then I have a friend who has been playing 6, who totaly rips.

Fuck!! i wish u lived in my area... cause i play a 7 string guitar and a 5 string bass... and i wanna start a band like that...more on the lines of like korn and orgy... but i only hav one otha guitarist!

im almost 16, ive been playing about 2 1/2 years...i can play just about anything, its not the years that count but the hours of practice really

I thought this myself after a few years of playing but I was completely wrong. I wasn't taking lessons or anything though. Just playing crap by ear and using tab. It helped get my fingers used to playing, but really didn't teach me a damn thing. Once I started to actually teach myself some theory and set up a decent practice schedule I started to get much better. Also doing the homerecording thing makes you become much more accurate. It seems so easy to play along to a cd, but once that red light comes on, it ain't easy anymore.

And as an addition to that last statement, hours of practice help. But if you are practicing correct, they're damn near useless. Quality hours of practice are much more important than the quantitiy of hours.

actually ive had pretty decent teaching, so that plus a shit load of practice for such a long time im better than most ppl i know that have ben playing a lot longer. ive recorded myself playing before, my playing was pretty clean for what i play(doom, black, litte death) and having emg pickups have helped me get a litte better than i was

Some instruction right off the bat would have helped me a lot. I spent the last couple years eliminating bad habits. The really bad ones are all but gone know. But my knowledge of theory is quite limited and I need to sit down and really dig into that shit.

the reason i cant really solo is b/c i have no idea about theory or scales or anything. and for having a fairly shitty rig it all comes out pretty clear enough with emgs. i dont even know chords or anything, cept the a chord lol

i tried to get into music theory, but id rather be shown so i said fuck it, ill wait til next year to take guitar class

I play drums, been playing two years, but I don't live anyhere near you. Which sucks, because my band has been trying to do the melodic death thing, w/ funk influences and a little Zeppelin/Sabbath, but hey, we're trying. Actually, I'm the only real fan of the style. Our guitarists, well, one is a newbie to the style, and the other is too lazy to give a fuck(sits around at pratice and belches, really), and our bassist is into classic rock.

Help!

I've just started playing guitar and I'm almost 19. I feel it is kinda to late, but I've been wanting to play the guitar for as long as can remeber. So one day I just bought a cheap one and have been practising ever since. I have no ambitions of playing in a band and become something. It is just something I have wanted to do and I needed a hobby. Luckely all my friends are total guitarwankers and I learn alot from them. One of them is going to take students and I'll be his testdummy for free. So I guess I'll learn some theory in the beginnig, wich seems to be important?
It's damn fun to play songs you like. It has made me apreciate the music even more.

ill be moving to PEnn state soon, im wanting to start a band, id like to play old-er-skool sweidshy death metal (vader, kaamos, delve, nominon, etc, etc.) i play drums/vocals.... yea i need to practice...

Here's a good idea for starters. Play the power chords with the index, ring and pinky fingers. It's tougher to learn that just using the index and ring, or index and pinky (I used to do that one) but it really helps to get all of your fingers working together. Also, try to stay away from the baseball bat grip. Really work on playing with the thumb on the back of the neck instead of wrapping it around. Those are two things I really screwed myself on when I started. It takes a long time to break out of that.
