According to a message posted at the official METALLICA fan club (MetClub), the band returned to its studio in Northern California on March 19-23 to do some "rehearsing and tweaking of the new songs." The band is believed to have since gone back to Los Angeles to continue recording its new album with producer Rick Rubin.
