ok...i tried to do a search on the subject but haven't found anything, but i did a test the day before yesterday with mic'in my ride from the top...and then from the bottom just so i can do a samples for menber XeS....well i noticed that while i had the mic the same difference from the ride and pointed towards the point where the stick hits the ride.....the bottom rings more.....just thought i would share that with you guys. what do you guys prefer...the ping and ring, or just the ping?

If I am desperate for the separation I always go under the ride, at an angle close to the bell. IF I don't need the separation or it's not stylistically necessary (jazz?) then I always prefer to mic above. Style of music is always a big factor, but usually 6-18 inches away, at like a 45 degree angle aiming kind of above the bell, in between it and the edge.

I always go on an angle, cause cymbals produce so many harmonics going vertically and horizontally out that I really go for a good balance of the two....

At the risk of nudging this over to an equipment thread, what cheap mic ($100-$150) would you recommend to mic the ride/hi-hat? Having looked at the MXL 603/604 and seen their pretty substantial rise in the upper mids/highs, I'm antsy about those...
