I've been needing a mic screen too, as my P sounds explode in the mic. I use an SM57 on a boom stand. What would you recommend for that? And I don't expect to pay an incredible amount for this item... Sure it is important... but not above the other things I could buy with a lot of cash. thx
As for building the mic cube... That would block most directions, but not the one you're standing in... The Sm57 is really a directional mic, and just pics up mostly directly in front of it... might be useful... but who knows.

For blocking plosives, you need a pop filter, which is different (and a lot simpler) than the above mentioned mic screen
