Mikael's audio interview

Oh yes, a great interview - thanks for sharing!

I found the host's accent a bit disturbing at first, but the questions were good (except for the age-old In Flames comparison) and Mikael proved once again that he is great at giving interviews. What he told about the song-writing process and the plans of recording the next album were very interesting.

Wow, really interesting interview, the accent was shocking at first, but ye get used to it heheee.

Now here are the most interesting things that I noticed:

- The album is really broad, so we don't have to fear of all the songs sounding like "WDIMA" or "BAH" ( ).

The thing is that those songs didn't sound The Same, but they had quite a few resemblances, hopefully what Mikael said of it being broad is more than the "broadness" between those two songs.

- As said before, lots of different sounds, even "kinda mellow", very different, not only agressive ones. :) :headbang: :kickass: :worship: :Smokin: :Spin:

- "We don't write for an specific market, it's kinda limited, takes all the fun of it, we do it to please ourselves.

- "Martin is the main songwrite who's pretty much arranging everything."

Now that was certainly the most interesting part of the interview.

So Mikael isn't the main songriter now?

And, is it Martin B. or Martin H.?

My guess is Martin H., but he never did specify... .

This has to be one of the most interesting interviews ever hehe. I admit it totally encouraged me to have faith on mighty DT once again, which is good, becuase I was feeling very  lately because of that.

I am looking forward to this album sooooooo bad.... .

We want a single!
We want a single!

He's referring to Martin H. And Mikael never was the main songwriter (they're talking about the music, not the lyrics), since Martin H. contributed to the highest number of DT songs overall, with more than a bunch of them penned by him and him alone.

What Rahvin said. Martin Henriksson has been the main songwriter on pretty much all DT albums (Niklas did a bit more on Skydancer and Fredrik Johansson a bit more on The Mind's I).

For those interested in useless DT-trivia, I have calculated the estimated percentages of how much each band-member has contributed to the music of Dark Tranquillity:

Henriksson: 38 %
Sundin: 22 %
Jivarp: 18 %
Johansson: 10 %
Brändström: 5 %
Nicklasson: 3 %
Stanne: 3 %
(Palm): 1 %

(These numbers are flawed, as they assume that every song has an equal amount of music. I made every song worth 10 points and then divided them among the songwriters. I took into account the order in which the songwriters are presented in the booklets, giving more points to those who are mentioned first. I ignored songs like Derivation TNB, where no songwriter is mentioned.)

As for Henriksson also taking care of arrangements for most of the songs, I had always suspected it (based on some things the band-members have said before), but it was nice to have it confirmed.

cool data. I'd never have realized that martin h has such a great influence on songwriting.. I actually thought Niklas was the one who wrote the most music. interesting stuff.

Duh.

Don't you read credits in the booklets? Martin H. is all over! :Smokin:

Sundin was the main songwriter in the early days (with Henriksson as the close second and Stanne and Jivarp contributing only very little; Friden never wrote any music or lyrics for DT) and remained an important part of the songwright trio Sundin-Johansson-Henriksson on the classic DT albums. Niklas still contributed quite a bit on Projector, but he hasn't written many songs since then. Meanwhile, Anders Jivarp has become the second most productive composer in the band. Of the "new guys" (Brändström & Nicklasson), Brändström did a quite lot on Haven, but his role has diminished a bit since; while Nicklasson has slowly become a rather active songwriter.

Im only longing more and more for the new album!
