Al used to use bullet mics into distorted neve pre's a lot...

But, then again, he was known for sampling everything thru his fairlight...

SM57s actually do pretty well for me on getting something in that vein.

I've read he used harmonizers alot because he didn't like his voice. I love his vocal sound in "just one fix"
